Think she's good enough to show?

My boys have shown market steers in our county fair for a fews years now and do pretty good. ( we don't buy "show steers" just show our own) We have a small (7 cows) herd of reg. Polled Herefords. We would like them to show at Badger Kick-off and was wondering if this Reload heifer would be good enough?

You raised her and if your boys want to show her then she's good enough.

Then you will have more to be proud of then "winning."

Totally agree it's home grown and you should be proud. She seems to be pretty deep bodied and she's got some rib shape to her. get her clipped up and she should be good to go!

She looks to be sound made and square with nice base width from the front.  Slick shear her neck and head and wash her and blow her forward and you may be surprised how nice she looks.  Our kids are planning on going to BKOC also with all bred and owned heifers.  The water gets pretty deep there but it is a great place to get the calves out and see some of the best cattle in the Midwest and the best fitters.

Feed the heck out of her for thirty days,wash and rinse her 3 times a week,use a brush vehemently on her legs,pull hair "up" and blow forward,in thirty days [which you have] you won't recognize her yourself. She appears to be a good heifer,and as posted, you raised her.

Would this be a candidate for fabric softener?  I have heard of herford breeders using this on curly hair.  Don't know much about it.  I raise straight haired angus with fairly good hair.

I agree with the rest of you.  Feed the heck out of her and get that hair working and she could look pretty good.

Thanks for the input! We are pretty green in the fitting department! Didn't realize what we were getting into when we started showing at the fair. Most kids at our fair have your everyday feedlot steers and wash and show. There is one group who are into the big shows and have real nice quality show steers and always win (no compitition). We started fitting and blowing (to the best of our abilities) our steers, and this year my sons hereford was in second place mid weight (the biggest group a whole 9 animals)class until the judge made a last minute switch and my son was third. Not too shabby. There were 3-4 clubbies he beat out! My oldest son bought a black calf from a friend, he placed 8th in the same class but won Reserve Grand Champion in the carcass show! The hereford was 5th in carcass which got him a blue ribbon. There were 20 steers in the carcass show and the real kicker....a holstien steer won Grand Champ. carcass! We have a good time.

There is a product called Cholesteral that works much better than Fabric Softner. It is sold in ethnic hair stores and is like lard and an you dissolve it in warm water. Spray on every couple days and work into the hair. BUT you have to wash out once a week with soap. If you over use it will make the hair straight but limp. For quantity you can get pretty cheap.

I think when you feed the heifer and work her hair and blow and clip you will be surprised. I think she is great quality for county fair show. I know they are only pictures but I would be ashamed to show her at county fair at all. She looks like she has all the right parts.
