Looks like you got a good deal! He does look a little rough up front but appears to be fairly stout.

Yeah, Im thinking about using a neck sweat. what are your opinions on that?

That would help with tightening up the leather on his chin and neck..But that won't really help his coarse shoulders, he could grow into them better with time. If you grow some good hair on him you could hide that...Overall he's a great steer for the money, can't go wrong!! Good Find

As a project, I would feed him hard and enter him into a carcass contest.

So is he an overall ok steer or crap steer? Im buying a few others aswell

What is your goal? If you want to win shows I would spend your whole budget on one really good steer. If you just want to raise pets for freezer beef I would buy a few cheap steers as long as you'll have buyers for them when they are fat.

Good deal!  I sold a much smaller calf at $725 ish this spring at an auction...he looks like he'd do really good carcass to me too!  Yeah, he's got some extra flab up front, but you can look at it as having more brisket to eat :)  hehe I love me some brisket.

I'm not going to beat around the bush here. That steer is good for eating and that's about it. If you take him to any show you're gonna get smoked. Get him fat and try to win the carcass show atleasy

With the price of feed is it worth putting that much into a steer you won't be able to be competition with??  Your letter of raising him for beef or selling him...you can find good steers for 1200-1500 range that you have a shot with...but he looks like a good real world type of steer

JMO He appears to be coarse in his shoulders, short necked, way to much leather on his front end (unless he is an american cross but does not appear to be due to the lack of sheath), high in his heart girth and flank. He does not appear to have much hip or bone. Sorry to be so critical but it is just one opinon. But with all that a $500 calf is good to feed for the freezer I just dont think you would be happy with the results in the show ring.

Looks like he will feed out ok. I would also suggest the carcass thing. He will get smoked everytime out as a show steer. I would also suggest spending $1000-$1500 on one good steer to show. he is a feedlot steer. should be a money maker at that price though.
