I don't think any rules were broken. The kid missed the two free throws on purpose.

The story as told on ESPN Radio (Mike & Mike) early last week:

The part about the kid and his mother is true.  Both coaches wanted the kid to play, but the refs said they were absolutely required to call the foul.  The opposing coach called his team team together and asked who wants to take these free throws?  The player everyone is talking about raised his hand and said he'd do it.  He walks up to his coach and says "You know I'm not going to make them."  to which his coach responded "I know."  The kid rolled both free throws on the ground past the goal - making them legal.

That team that missed the free throws won and it wasn't that close (I seem to remember them saying they won by 20 points +/-.

No rules were violated.  The refs did what they had to.

Although running up a 100 point score is obviously ridiculous, this incident is apples and oranges.  I suspect most teams would handle the situation the same way.  That's not to lessen what this team did, but I think most of our kids - especially those in organized sports or 4-H/FFA - know when to step up and do the right thing.

Chambero, if that is true, why didn't the girls CATHOLIC team in Tx tell their coach they WOULD NOT run the score on the special team??  No, some kids do NOT know when they need to step up and that is when having good parents (recent teams from the MIDWEST!! GRIN), and a good coach (teaching that winning isn't EVERYTHING) takes over.

Doesn't matter..... the team made the right decision and then was supported by the coach and apparently the community.  THOSE are the kids that give me hope forthe future!
