Thoughts on this steer calf. Yellow jacket x Point taken

Just wondering what everybody's thoughts are on this calf? He's a late March/ early April born. Thanks in advance.

Is he on level ground?  His pose isn't helping him any.  Would like to see him standing more naturally and on the move.

If you take a piece of paper and level it at the bottom of the hind feet, you can tell he's standing with his front feet in a hole.

He is raw and green. Only been off the cow for a week and yes he is standing in a hole. This is the 3rd time he had been tied.

The calf is very hard to look at...however,

Good on the ground as far as softness in his pastern and nice hook on the front legs.

Looks like he is good haired considering he has probably never had a bath.

If he is good in his top on level ground, and he is good fronted once you get all of that hair off his neck, he gives me the impression that he may be good feeding and easy doing.

Get another picture of him and post it.

Id shoot for a better picture on level ground before anyone can give you a true judgement- those yellow jackets are hard feeding things but it's been done before by better feeders than myzelf I suppose

Pictures are an extremely limited medium for evaluating stock, and I think most people just want the best look they can get.

The picture is about 10% as good as the calf in this example. I bet he's pretty decent.

I find this comment interesting.  I haven't seen anyone ask for a "fluffed and puffed" picture.  It is obvious this picture is not a good representation of an animal.  So asking for a better picture is only logical and I wouldn't begrudge anyone asking to see a better shot if you are truly wanting opinions on the animal.  As he stands you can't judge him....in a hole, fighting halter, against the rail, dark shot, other calves crowding view.  If you want a true evaluation of the animal wait to post until you can present the animal in a better light.

I've sold plenty of calves off a cell phone picture. It's not rocket science.

I don't care if he is fluffed and puffed -- would prefer that he his not, but standing on level ground would be a good start, and better yet a video on bare ground so I can see his pasterns and feet placement on the move is the best way to help a poster evaluate their critters.  I don't buy cattle tied high to a fence with their front feet standing in a hole and figure I would be doing a disservice to the poster to give an opinion on one presented that way.

Completely agree with Olson Family and GoWyo.  You don't need a professional photographer.  We sell all of our calves through a Facebook page with me taking the pics on my cell phone.  We make sure they are on level ground and sometimes will have a little clip job on them and sometimes not.  We also post vids of them walking in the pen.  Structure seems to be the basis of most judging these days so you need to show that for true opinions.  "Fluffed and Puffed" or photoshopped are not my preference when looking at cattle and therefore not how we present.  It doesn't take a huge effort or ability to show they cattle for what they are.

Thank you for your input. I shouldn't have posted the picture without him presented correctly, that's on me. He is coming along well on the halter and feed. We are having heavy right now. I will get a better picture in a couple days when the baling is done.

HD Bloodstone x CYT Dream Lady Solution heifer that we sold 1/2 of to Colburn Cattle Co last fall. We're really excited about her. She should run hard at NAILE.

Here is an updated picture. His sire is a Yellow Jacket son(Yellow Jacket X Mimms Simmi Donor) X Point Taken. He is two weeks on feed now. I hope he is easier to see in this picture.
