because I'm an ignorant southerner I assume lightning in a snowstorm isn't common?

No it isn't, we got it here a couple of years ago, it was really weird.

It usually means you will get a foot or more snow out of that storm.

We had thundersnow Monday night.  Really a weird thing.... and if 14" of snow and 1.5" sleet and 1/4" inch of ice come with thundersnow..... I would rather not see it again.
