What are you vaccinating? Fall calves on cows, weaned calves, open cows, etc? That would help in determining what you need. What about pour-on? We usually do this at vaccinating time.

How many people actually use the pinkeye vaccines?

Our vet recommends it, but the year we did use it we had a case of pinkeye. We haven't used it the last few years and instead focus more on fly control and have been fine.

It seems to me some people swear by it and others wouldn't even think of using it.

Have to watch the vira-shield, or any other modified live vac.  Although they work better, if you have calves in the oven, it could cause the cows to abort if they have not been vaccinated prior.

Big fan of pinkeye vaccine, as for fly control I can only parrot this but my entomology teacher is a livestock entomologist and he claims that fly control has a minimal effect of pinkeye.  He claims that if you talk to the old timers they will talk of pinkeye problems long before there were horn fly problems.  He also says fly tags go in cows not calves.

oh forgot to mention that...cows with calves to be bred in a little over a month, open heifers that will be bred in dec. , and 1 bred heifer that is due in oct.
oh and we always pour on the same time we vaccinate, with ivomec

something else i have wondered about...do  they make single dose vaccines???...seems like i always need 11 doses and they either come in 10 or 50....someone told me once that you have to use all of the vaccine within 24 hours of opening or it went bad...is that true?  i usually end up getting 2 10's and throwing out what's left over...

Be careful what you say if you don't know for sure: Virashield is made from a killed virus, not modified live virus and is completely safe to use on pregnant cows.
