This fall my sister and I are going to be visiting the midwest again. We are going to be in SD for 4-5 days and then driving to IOWA from there. We have started a list of places to visit and would like to know what you think the 'must visit' places are. Thanks for the help.

can you visit Hawkeye Breeder in Adel, IA? To me that would be neat & interesting.

Are you going to be "shopping"?  Steers or heifers, both?  Where are you coming from?  I think I could come up with a pretty good list depending on what you want to see.

If you hit Hawkeye, Nichols bull stud would be less than 1/2 hour away, but depending on the time of year you are planning on coming most bulls maybe back out in the pastures. Sullivans would be on your way down from SD & Common Sense would be close to them, as well as Roecker's, and many, many more.

You're always welcome at Oakbar Ranch--just off Interstate 35 on the Iowa/MN border.  In fact we're only minutes away from the I90/I35 interchange.  We love to talk cattle and the local Casino is only 3  miles away if you like that kind of entertainment.  Our operation(actually my daughter's role in it) was featured on an Iowa Public TV show prior to last year's state fair.    If you want to see it go to IPTV.org and check out the State Fair programs.( I think its called" State Fair Prep Winner")  We have predominantly Shorthorn cows with a few clubbies thrown in for good measure.  We also have a well know Simmy breeder just down the road and several other small, reputable breeders in the immediate area.

Stop by if you get the chance!!  We have heifers on the ground by Vortec and Who Made Who, and bull calves by Sonny, Tonic, Ali, Who Made Who, & Sin City.  We're still expecting calves out of Blue Blood, SS Deadwood, and our clean up bull  SULL-GNCC K C Chiefs Pride(Trump X Augusta Pride 330H)  We also have a breeder in the area who raises a lot of Heatwave, Hannibal, and Manchild calves.

There are a lot of places to go & see in Iowa but there are also some things that puzzle me.    Why do the interstates in IA have rest areas every 20 miles?  ;D

Have fun, enjoy and watch out for the I.diots O.ut W.alking A.round.    :D :D :D sorry.. just couldn't resist an Iowa joke.

If you get here by the 14th you could check out the Clay County Fair.  Last year 319,000 attended this 9 day event.  This year it runs Sept 6-14.  They start the beef shows the 1st Saturday with 4h/FFA feeders and breeding heifers on Sunday.  The 13th & 14th are the open breed shows.  There are some fabulous cattle at this fair.

That fair sounds like a fun place to check out if we are going through that area. Where is Clay Co. near?

How far south in Iowa are you going?  Brad Hook, Goretska (sp) and others are down here.  I live just south of the border into Missouri.  I only have 22 cows calving this year, but I have some nice ones.  Most of mine our Money Man or Hard Core.

Clay County is in Northwest Iowa.  The fair is actually in Spencer, IA and there really are a lot of good cattle there!!

We are flying into Sioux falls then driving to Mitchell, to see a friend and look at some nearby cattle, then onto Wessington Springs pasture sale for a few days. When we leave the springs we will be driving to Salem then onto Iowa. CHAP-We are pretty much open to any route in Iowa we have about 4 days. I saw that the south central club calf producers (?) have their pasture sale laborday weekend  :( so we'll miss that. Right now we are just trying to kinda make a route. We can get alot accomplished in 4 days!!!

I haven't been through this group but the pictures look nice and have been about that weekend.  I am sure you can ask them their plans for '08.

http://www.showsteers.com/protour/

then there are others around I35 and Minneosta border and tons in central, south central and sw Iowa.  I assume they will update their ads as summer comes, but they probably already know thier plans as far as '08 dates.

While in the Wessington Springs area make sure you stop at Roger Hainy's place.  One of the most impressive set of cows I have ever seen.(calves are really nice too).  Because of your time frame and the need to get back to SD.  I would suggest staying in the western half of IA. Would love to show you some in Eastern IA but, you are gonna put on a lot of miles to do that.  The ProTour stops would be a great place to start.  THe West Central IA group would give you even more options.  link http://www.showsteers.com/WCICCP/index.htm
I think you could burn up a couple days on these if you ran hard.  Good luck!
