So today has definitely not turned out how I was expecting it.  It started at 6am when we were getting baby calves in to rinse and put in the barn.  I noticed one of our donor cows lay down right in the middle of eatting cake.  Didn't think much of it at the time since the cow wasn't due for at least another 23 days.  At 9am, we noticed the cow laying down again in the pasture and eating while doing it.  Odd, but still not concerning.  We got back from our neighbors a half hour later, and now the cow is laid on her side and acting like she was calving.

THAT"S IT!  I think we having a baby!  We put her in the barn and watched her for about 2 hrs with her in full blown labor, but nothing.  I finally put her in the chute to check things out and make sure everything was in the right position.  While checking things out, my fears were confirmed.  No movement and no signs of life.  I proceeded to pull what I thought was a dead calf.  The placenta felt thin and kind of rotten, and the fluid seemed to have abnormal color to it.

When the calf was out, I went to lay it to the side, and that's when I see the calf move a little.  I immediately starting rubbing it down and helping it breath with some chest compressions.  Within a 1/2 hour, here's how it all turned out!  STANDING!

We are going to name her American Hope.  Both in a tribute to 9/11 and the fact that she should have never lived.

Was the calf out of Triple X?

I had a similar experience 2 years ago.  You did a great job.  Hope the others come on the right day.

I have 5 heifers that I am setting up with.  I have to go put them up for the night.  I have them on Bermuda grass.  I have gotten about a half inch of rain.  Our first since the first of July.  Makes calving a little more trying as it has come in just a sprinkle for 24 hours, but it also brings lots of smiles here in Texas.  Hope your straw stays dry and the calves come easy.

We had a Rocky Balboa calf from one of the first calf heifers you bred last year survive at 264 days gestation.  Plenty early also, but probably not quite as early as yours.

Most of our cows have calved out early so far this year.  We've had few born after their actual due data, but a bunch in the 10 days prior to it.

Seeing all the rain we have received the past 24 hrs, I would have to say this low pressure system was a strong one.  I am sure one more factor to why she was born so early.  We weighed the heifer today and she was 56#.

Joe Boy, she was not a Triple X calf, but she is a 3/4 sib to him.  Hardcore out of our CTR Success x Traveler 6807 donor.
