I will tell you about the one week we owned some chi cows. Big old calves, no guts or fat, and there wasn't a fence they couldn't jump. Chi's never did impress my much as mama cows.

Cade you must have been dealing with some old school Chi's. They aren't wild, just smart and athletic. Chi cows are good mothers, good milkers, & fertile. There is a movement to breed more Chi back into some of the clubbie cows. Heck almost all clubbie bred cows classify as Chi. WMW, Full Flush, HW,HS, and the list goes on & on. A newer somewhat higher % Chi bull that I am watching is a bull named JSC Momentum 74T. He is a 40% Chi blood bull that looks like he may work well today. CTR Success is known to make great cows. You can find a pic & info on JSC Momentum @ bullbarn.com in the club calf section.

Cade you need to breed a couple of cows to a good Chi bull to see if they have changed any since your last go around. JMO. Brent

that like asking what do people think of clubby heifers!!! IMO Just darned neared everything out there could be a chi (lol)

Agree, though, that the chi in em, is a littl emore on the maternal sides of things...  I've seen quite a few awefully good calves that are HW/ HS x Chi x Ang

With the way you can register Chi's are there really any "real" Chi's left out there?  Some make great mom's just like any breed, but with the low percentages and more clubby influence out there, the predictibility is that of a cross bred anymore in my opinion.

Some chi influence in your cow herd will be very beneficial.  Chi will add length of front, good hip and tail set and a showy but functional leg.  In addition, good chi or chiangus genetics will most definately fix some udder issues, held high and tight with good teat placement and udder longevity.  Most commercial heifers in the show ring are going to have at least a small % chi in them.  As noted, all breeds can have problems, but a little bit of "good" chi blood in your cows can really help.

Doesn't Chi=Registered crossbred? A local clubby breeder once told me, "All you need to register as a Chi is take a straw of Chi semen, wave it over your semen tank, then anything in the tank can be registered Chi." From what few PB Chi's I've seen, I wouldnt want to use them on the clubby side. JMO

Cade probably had experience with REAL CHI cattle. The Chi cattle now are nothing more than the semen in the tank idea that CMB mentioned, which in reality means, they are not CHI at all, but a composite. In fact, some clubbie bulls are listed as Chi's but when you look at their pedigree (If you can find it) they are 1/16 Chi.
I had the same experience with Chi's while showing in the 80's. They were awful. Tall, gutless, hard fleshing, mean, wild, nuts etc etc.  I know of only one purebred breeder of chi's left, and I beleive he is in southern MO. I'm talking the white haired, dark nose, dark hooves, dark eye liner PUREBRED CHI's.

Well, I wasn't denying those cows' ability to milk. In fact, they sure put everything they had into raising their calf. But tall, gutless, wild, and hard keeping I have to agree with. CAB, I certainly don't want to get into an argument here. I'm sure Chi's have changed a lot since we last had them, but I won't touch them. On the other hand, hybrid vigor can also make some big time improvements. As show cattle, Chi cross are probably some of the best. But I wouldn't turn them out to be mama's in my pasture, which is what I was trying to answer.

There's a family in the NW that raises PB Chi's. They were featured on the Cattle Show some time back. Wasn't there a SP member that also had some PB Chi's in the NE part of the country. I want to say the New England area.

  Cade, admit it, you just loved the looks of some of those Chi cross bulls in Denver!! Dig in. You're going to need to use a Chi bull on those ground sow cows to pretty them up and extend them a tick.

Mize in Stephenville, TX still has the true white Chis.  Drive by them all the time.

There still are true ChiAngus cattle out there.  Charles Burk near Amarillo, TX has as good as they come.  Schrick's in Weatherford, TX do to (bought out the old Pass Cattle Co outfit).

I very well remember the old wild Chis also.  They didn't have too many structure issues.  They could run like hell.  We still have a couple of cows we should enter in a race.  Not mean, they just get in a hurry sometimes.  First in the lot - first out of the chute.

I'd argue that that the wrong turn on "clubby cattle" happened with some of the Maine and Shorthorn blood that got brought into the old Chi lines.

A guy about 5 miles away from us used to have a couple.They would occasionally pass through our place on one of their many field trips.

Oh, I won't argue that they've got a cool look. Heck, don't you try to think I'm not a sucker for a cool profile. But they just ain't my cup of tea. Now a good LimFlex heifer........ Oh geez, I'll just bring some to the National Western next year and show you. Hold me to that. Of course, I'll sacrifice some leather up front for a brood cow look. Different strokes for different folks I reckon.

People often associate Chi cattle with bad temperments.  I can say I have Chi's, Angus, Simmentals, and even a few Brangus cows, and without a doubt the Chi cattle are the gentlest and easiest to handle of them all.  Those Angus cows are the ones you have to watch out for!!  Yes I realize all breeds have their problems,  but I'll settle for quality Chi cow over them all.

Nothing like a shot of Chi for the look.  Also our angus cows will eat you lunch long before a Chi, and milk has been as good as any thing

I think we are talking about two different "Chi" cattle. C-Cross, and Shearem, are you talking about the WHITE PUREBRED CHI cattle, or the black crossbred chi's that are in the assoc now?
There is a HUGE difference.... in fact, usually about 98%!

I think you've found the answer - it really depends on what you're calling a Chi.  Is she a 1/2, 3/4, 3/8, fullblood (if they still exist) etc.  Depending on the percentage you're probably going to a different opinion.  I remember a few years ago standing in the aisle at Louisville with Randy Daniel, Doug Parke and Jim Ligon and an incredibly good black heifer walked by.  We all thought she was truly a "great one" but didn't have any idea what she was.  Found out later she had previously shown as a Chi, a Maine, and as a composite.  Her three generation pedigree had Maine, Chi, Angus and Simmy identified.  I just could never figure out how many of those breeds contributed to her "greatness" and which of the various phenotypes were going to show up in her offspring.

what if you want ribeye?  they are usually under 100lbs per sq in ribeye.
