I am trying to find an oral calf calm that actually works, unless I am administrating mine wrong? I use the Sullivan's Show Cattle Calm, and use it as directed, the night before and morning of but I feel like it doesn't work? I have a steer that is just a snot and he pulls me around and I have been working with him since he's been weaned a year ago! Any advice?
Show is the 21st!!

Thanks
Lindsey

Calf calm has no real fast acting ingridients in it. I used it on a heifer one time and it didn't do anything just made her eat more in my opinion. Only real quick ways are ace or rompem which can be tested for. You can feed them melatonin ahead of time.

Put a humbug (nose clamp) in that will usually help with attitude but it has to be used correctly.  Do not pull on it unless you need to and only light pressure when you have to.  We used them all the time when showing bulls.  If you use one put it in and get him use to it before the show.  We would take them out  so they would not get caught on something.

An inexpensive and easy to administer idea is Melatonin, which is an all natural sleep aid. You should be able to find this at any drugstore in a pill form. Crush up about 8 pills in the morning and evening and mix it in with his feed. Make sure you crush the pills into an all powder form with no chunks and mix it really well; I'd hate to have the calf turn away from his food because of the taste. Do this every day until your show, and it should make him a big sleepy puppy dog.

We've got a steer this year who is plain rotten and goes after any and everyone. We've been doing this Melatonin regimen, and it seems to be working! We just started four days ago and our show is next week. From what I can tell, it's working well already.

Melatonin, but I would give him about 100 mg or 30 tabs each evening. Same amount you use to grow hair, won't hurt him. If that amount makes him to sleepy drop it to 20, if 30 does not seem to be enough hit him with 40. Grind them up an put on the top of his feed or if you have bollus capsules fill them with the right dosage and administer it that way.

The only way we've had any luck with calf calm is to give at least 4 tubes, one every 3-4 hours with the last being about an hour before the calf shows.  Yes, it's expensive and a pain (especially if you show in the morning), but if you need it to work, that's the only way that I've found.

We use vitamen B thiamine, 30 min or so before going in the ring. the vet told us that most animals that act crazy were deficient in thiamine. he also said we couldn't overdose them. it comes in a 50 cc bottle for 6 or so dollars. give it orally and have a good hold on them because they don't like the taste.

I would follow the advice about the melatonin and also give 2 ounces of whiskey by syringe the night before and the morning of the show. That combination worked really well for me.

Big wad of Copenhagen will work too. I've seen many dads throw one in a steer's mouth and they are acting up.
