Hey guys here is a cow that I showed my senior year and we were Junior Charolais Champion in houston in 2010. I bred her to a bull we had called Turn 2 that is an Icepick son/Outlook Cow  X New Look Cow since he was easy calving. Here is her calf out of that icepick cross. I am adding pics of her, the calf, and the bull. She needs to be downsized a touch and powered up some. I am thinking walks alone, believe in me, or walks on water.

Don't mess up a good thing.  Breed her back the same way.  That's a great looking little bull!

Kinda agree with the others.  That calf is pretty nice.  Realy like the female and the bull/sire wasn't too bad.  What are you shooting for?? Club calves?  I would use any one of those or just Heat Wave.

yellow jacket!!!!  (lol) no not really just kiddin kevin i know you like yellow jacket too much to use on your own cows. if she was mine i would breed her to jimmy the greek for a clubby steer. chances to be a cool color too, milkman wouldnt be too far from my sights as well. only problem is you may end up with a market heifer if the calf is a female but i guess you just cut your losses at that. . . .

If I was flushing her - I'd use Heat Wave.  That has worked too many times.

But I'm guessing this girl is really special to you and it sounds like this is for a calf for her to carry. So, I wouldn't want to take any chances on calving difficulty with her.  In my book that knocks out Heat Wave and Milkman (he would insert too much Charolais anyway).

Personally, I just don't like Jimmy the Greek or Eyes on the Money.  They cross the line for me on too small.  I have yet to get a calf out of those two bulls that got remotely big enough to use.  However, I never used them on a 100% Charolais female so maybe you'd have a chance for them to grow.

To me, Monopoly is the safest bet to get a good steer with no calving trouble.  Monopoly's downside is some of his calves just aren't thick enough and some might be a little too small.  But momma is going to give the calf the meat.  In reality, judges are rarely using the thickest calves know - they want balance.  And Monopoly does that great + making them softer.  I would think a Monopoly calf out of her would finish very well.  Every Monopoly calf I have is getting better. That little black heifer I had at A&M was a Monopoly out of a half-blood Charolais cow.  She wasn't big enough frame to win, but she is darned sure thick enough, soft enough, and sound enough.  I haven't ever had to help a cow having a Monopoly calf.

I used the heck out of Walks Alone this year, and that little red steer you saw was out of him.  But, I'm not sure of the soundness and balance on his calves long-term yet.  I think the Monopoly's are distinctly sounder as a group.  But I'd sure use Walks Alone as a second choice.  I'd have to think about Smilin Bob but that's a longer shot till we see more calves.

Since you mentioned that she needs sized down a little, I could recommend a bull that will sire low BW, power, softness, soundness, eye appeal, hair, consistency, extreme docility, etc., but...

...despite the fact that I have frame scored several of his 1/2 blood offspring consistently in the frame 4 - 5 range out of frame 5-6 cows (I would guess that this is due to heterosis), including a 13.5 month old son who frame scored a 5+ today out of probably a frame 6 dam, some person is likely going to say that he is way too small.

...another person might say that I am just trying to sell semen on my own bull, even though as of 5/23/11, we now only have 146 straws of it left (maybe less if my partner has sold any in the past few days) before it's completely gone, we have decided NOT to collect him anymore & we will likely be completely sold out by the end of the summer or so unless we decide to jack the price up sky high on the last 50-100 straws.  I don't overly care if I sell it to anybody on this board or not, as I've had a plenty good enough market for it as it is.  Was told that a daughter sold in Texas for $7,000+ last fall & his calves dominated at several shows, including the National Show, in 2010/2011, so selling his semen isn't too much of a problem.  But, yes, I do own part semen rights on him & yes, I do enjoy the profits from selling his semen.  However, I really do think that he's an awfully good bull, who sires some awfully good show calves & I think that he works very well on bigger framed cattle that need to be sized down a few inches.

...somebody else might say why not use an OCC bull or a Duff bull, etc., if you want to go in the smaller framed Angus direction.  You certainly could, but while there may be one or more out there, I have never seen an Angus bull who will consistently sire the amount of hair that this bull sires.  Also, the Angus Association doesn't have percentage registries for their offspring like this bull's breed does nor does the Angus Association offer open shows for percentage breeding cattle & steers at Houston, Star of Texas, Denver, KC, Louisville, NILE, etc.

Compared to a composite bull, this bull will give a you a true F1, which should mean more consitency, more heterosis, etc., not to mention a really good chance at a very nice smokey steer, bull or heifer & the calf should be really easy on your cow.  Anyway, I don't really want to be the cause of another 5-8 page thread, but I do think that he would work well & you asked for suggestions... so, if you are interested in learning more or interested in seeing pics of other offspring, etc., you can email me at [email protected].  If you are not, then no big deal... I'll bow out.  I will say this, if you are not interested in my bull, I would personally be looking at a purebred bull for her or maybe a true F1 & not a multi-breed composite, but that is JMHO.

With all that said, it all really depends upon what you want to do & what you think is the best direction for you, because there are several good options available... I just think that this is 1 of them.
