After looking at JIT's wonderful pictures from Scotland I came up w/ this thread. If you could go anywhere in the world to look at cattle & how they're raised where would you go? Also why would you go there?

Me, it would be Australia. I'd love to see the big spreads & how they are run. The types of cattle raise, feedstuffs & what their biggest concerns & future looks like.
I'd also like to go to France to see the Fullbloods that they are raising. It would be neat to see where the Maine breed started.

this is easy.

i would grab about 10 people over the age of 70, at least 5 under that age on an all expense paid trip to texas, wyoming, montana, canada and france, to select 10-20 fullblood maine cows, collect some bulls if they weren't collected already.

the reason for the kids over 70, is they have seen it done, and if they could start over with what they know now, what would they do.  i would pick some cows that the group was hotly divided over probably first, and maybe 2 or 3 i liked

why would i do this?  for a breed that is so tightly held, there is a dramatic difference in phenotype, and they should be quickly able to say something, and, it may differ from the assumptions of 30 or so years experience north american breeders.

i would like to see more communication between france and north america with fullblood maines, in spite of all the double muscling.

About a two week trip in early fall through the western states looking at cattle and they just didn't happen to mind if I did a little hunting on their ranches while passing through.

I really don't know where I would go that is new, but i know where I would go BACK too. The Flint Hills of Kansas, and the Sand Hills of Nebraska. Those 2 places are the most beautiful places i have ever seen. We drove by Burns, Kansas on our way back from Oklahoma. That would be where I would build my dream ranch.  :)
