    Heifer Scholarship

Currens’s Cows Foundation will be awarding a heifer scholarship again this October, applications and details can be found on our website www.currenscows.com. We limit the scholarship to youth in California, so if any of you on here know of a young person who likes to show cattle, works hard and...

    one pretty heifer

Well someone in Colorado ended up with a very nice bred heifer to build off of. Sounds like they are doing an awesome job with the California Youth Ag Expo in just their second. it appears to be quite competitive as well as well organized, I need to go next year to check it out.

    Feeding a Mini

I would have assume you feed them the same way. If you base the amount of feed off of body weight, 3% is 3%, If a 900 pound heifer needs to consume 27 pounds (hay and feed)a day, a 400 pound mini would need 12 pounds a day, that would be my assumption.

    Dealing with it

Thank you, we have been lucky with both the young people and the support we have gotten to be able to do this. Ron Colburn has been gracious enough to supply the heifers up to this point, but it would be nice to find other avenues so he does feel obligated to do it every year. I have been...

    Dealing with it

As some of you may know, the foundation we started in my grandsons memory, Curren's Cows, sponsors heifer projects to kids in California. This year we sponsored a young lady from Shandon California, and a Young Man from our home town. With Covid and all the shut downs both young people have had...

    Night blind cow

Have an older (9) cow who seems to be night blind, gets around fine during the day but at night she uses her nose to get around. I turned them out on the new grass in the pasture, with just a portion of the hot wire pulled back, so I can close it off if it rains or to irrigate if it does not...

    Melatonin pills question?

If you are going to use the Melatonin tablets for hair, 3mg, you need to give them 33 tablets a day, this equals the dosage they recommend with grow & shine (100mg a day). We fed them in the morning when we put the calves in the stall, counted out a whole bottle of pills and bagged them so all...

    Aluminum Livestock Trailers

Most of the time you will not pulled over pulling a livestock trailer if it is only 2 axle, add the third axle and they will pull you over for a class A almost every time. Had a friend hauling 2 calves (2000 lbs, plus tack) back from Denver to California, he was pulling a 3 Axle trailer 30ft...

    Angus heifers?

I would think because of the covid it might be the right time to go the embryo rout, find you a decent heifer this year, if the shows go on then you have an animal to drag around if they do not you will have a decent cow and hopefully competitive calves on the way. We had 2 heifers from...

    Angus heifers?

Colburn Cattle Company, They have a really good set of cows producing some awesome Heifer calves. They also sell quit a few embryos throughout the year if you wanted to go that rout www.colburncattle.com

In your opinion, who is the best show calf producer?

If your looking for a good one, don't mind paying for it and are going to put the work in (biggest factor) Blaine Rodgers, Rodgers Livestock will be able to mach you up with one. I think Dave Guyer's Daughter has been dragging one around this year and doing very well, along with a host of other...

Can We Get Some "STEER" In Steerplanet

We did not have a State Fair, nor did we have any County Fairs in our area, hard to speak about it when it just did not happen this year. Virtual shows is what the kids had, I did not see those so I got nothing for you.

Is there any breed whos main attribute is it's junior heifer projects.

Angus seem to be dominating the heifer shows the past few years, when my kids started it was Shorthorns, seems like everything cycles around.

    Getting a steer fat

I would use the Stabilized Rice Bran, one pound a day to start and work him up to 2 lbs a day over about a week, if your trying to hold him on weight, use a filler, sweet feed,  rice bran and calf manna(feed the calf-mana the same as the rice bran), you can keep him fresh looking and at the same...

    Looking for advice/tips....

melatonin, start him on 30 mg and see if it does not take the edge off of him. We had one just like it, a really nice Friction steer, one day he would be fine the next spook and get real worked up over nothing. We put him on melatonin and just kept working with him, you could feel him start to...

Fat supplements rice bran vs cooked barley

I really like the layer of cover Stabilized Rice Bran will lay down on a calf, nice and smooth, easy to feed and no cooking. We fed it to put finish on one starting them 3 months out from the fair, we fed it earlier if a calf was behind. We also use it when holding one, grass hay, filler...

    heifer scholarship program update

An update on the scholarship program we started 3 years ago in honor of my grandson, we were able to supply 2 Angus heifers this past season to 2 very hardworking young women this year. They both did wonderful jobs with the heifers. Thankfully they were able to attend a few show early this year...
