    EPDs

Thanks, I was just surprised at the huge differences, you would suspect that you would also have huge swings when using the bulls (her sons) as well.

    EPDs

Okay I was looking at a bull catalog, you have 6 full sibs all approximately the same age about 20 months, my question is how can the EPDs very so much from one to the other? The biggest gap is  Birth weight of calf 96 Ced -4 Bw+4.1 ww+80 YW +125 Radg +.20 DMI +1.02 SC +1.93 Doc +20 Cem +3 Milk...

1st time steer kids- one won’t eat his grain much

Are the calves fed together or apart? Some times a little competition with increase their appetite, feed grain first, hay after they finish. Ours had access to free choice hay at night after they finished their feed, stalled during the day no hay just grained in the morning. If one tends to eat...

    Water Intake

Things we have tried, molasses in the water, we were on a well and fairgrounds had treated water. Train to drink out of a bucket at home, we would have the calves stalled during the day, the first thing the boys would do before working with them is offer them water in a 5 gallon bucket of fresh...

1st time steer kids- one won’t eat his grain much

Like Gargan stated no need for Alfalfa, he needs just quality grass hay. Try and skip a feeding of grain and see if he does not eat better the next feeding. Feeding one is the biggest challenge, every steer is different and finding what works each one can be frustrating, over time you will get...

    Silveira angus vs Colburn angus

Best way is to go look at them, Colburns seem to have something special with their 1339 cow and her daughters. Going and looking at them, look at their mamas, that will give you a better idea.

    Silveira angus vs Colburn angus

You are asking kind of a loaded question. I can speak a little about Colburn's, I have seen a couple calves from Primo on clubby cows and it worked, but each cow will work different with a different bull. Both breeders first priority is producing quality Angus so if their bulls work with a...

It has been a good first year.

Well we are nearing the end of our first year of our foundations sponsoring beef projects, we were able to sponsor 2 heifer projects and one steer project. Both the girls with the heifer projects have done a great job, all though the heifers were from to different ends of the spectrum. A...

    Weight gain

Like Gowyo said it can be done if you manage him right, any set back and you are going to be in a tight spot. The calf needs to gain 3.7 pounds a day, He has to be on feed and stay on feed, you need to start him off right, this is the time you want to bring him up to full slowly. If he has not...

Hooves turning out on 1 yr old 1000 lb steer

It appears to be structural. He does need a trimming, his inside toe of the hoof longer longer than the outside toe, it may help a bit but it will never go away.

    Houston

The person has been a member for 7 years and has 15 post, I would not worry to much. It will be at least 6 month before the post again.

    Heifer

This is my heifer out of Exar Tryon and an Ali granddaughter, she may have weighed 60 pounds at birth (first picture), in the second picture she is 308 days and weighing 870, I am thinking of breeding her to The Answer for a first calf. I added a picture of her clipped up, This is the heifer we...

    Heifer Scholarship update

Thank you everyone, I could not have asked for better people and families to start with. Mark, here is the other picture of the 2, they bonded on day one. The young lady came to the house to check her out, I was not home, my wife said in less than 2 minutes she was rubbing and handling the her...

    Heifer Scholarship update

Are foundation (Curren's Cows) is half way through our first year of sponsoring a Breeding Heifer project, along with the heifer project we sponsored a local high school kid and a steer project and are helping with another heifer to a local 4H member. The young lady who received the original...

Where have all the readers/posters gone?

I challenge anyone to find a Shorthorn post on this site where it did not go sideways at some point. If I see a Shorthorn post, I grab the popcorn and start reading, never fails to entertain.

    Ringworm Around Heifers Eye

Our vet prescribes fulvison, at the same time they are on the fulvison we topically treat the effective area, I have used bag balm, corona ointment, and fluidfilm,  I believe the sooner you can get the skin to soften up and heal the faster you get the hair to grow back. The young man's calf my...

Where have all the readers/posters gone?

Where are the first timers coming to ask for tips and advice, I think we need to make sure we are more cordial when a new comer shows up, "maybe look in the archives" is not the best answer for someone new to the site. I still enjoy reading the Shorthorn post, never saw so many people from the...

    Frail Angus Show Hfrs

First off nyk, I do love the heifer you posted in the past, and if I was picking replacement heifers she is the type. Here is a portion of and article I found, it basically confirms what you are saying, show heifers do tend to go one direction as far as type and look. An Ideal Breeding Heifer...
