    calming agents for 4H steer

Cattle produce melatonin, it is a natural occurring hormone, almost all of the hair growth supplements for cattle contain Melatonin,  I know it is not listed as a banned substance for showing nor is it tested for.    We used the Grow-n-shine, the pills from walmart more for hair growth and for...

    Feed Help please

Here is a link to Purina's Honors feed, the info in it on feeding is pretty spot on whether you feed their feed or another, the basic info is quite helpful. As far as the 3% we always shot for that percent on the calves from 600 to 900 once we hit around 27 pounds 25 feed and 2 pounds...

    Feed Help please

He should be eating around 21 pounds a grain a day, plus his free choice hay. You might be better off spending a little more and going with a sacked show feed. I would start him on a pound of stabilized rice bran a day, and work him up to 2 pounds (1 pound a feeding). I would make sure he is on...

Calf calm, peace pellets- any other ideas??

Melatonin, start with 30mg and see if it helps, only way to find out is start him a week before the show giving him his full dose at each evening feeding. If he acts up when you get there up it 15mg's. Take calf-calm, if he still seems a little edgy hit him with it in the morning of the show...

You will get all kinds of different philosophies on this, I would go to the search at the top left and type in hair care you will find plenty of reading. I'm sure you will find a daily program that works for you. We rinse at least once a day the last few months, if it is hot, morning and night...

    Thoughts on 4h heifer

She does not look like the same heifer at all, does she look the same now as she did in those March photos, if so she is a little tank. Work the hair and clip her up, I bet she looks good.

    Thoughts on 4h heifer

The heifer is a little plainer made, quality hay (all she wants) and some grain will help. just training the hair will also help. She does appear to be an easy going type which is a plus. What would also help her looks in the photo is working the hair, it goes all kinds of direction and chops...

    Opinions on steer please

If it seems that the hoof is tender, check for hoof rot, the area between his hoof will be for a lack of a better word gooey, and have a bad smell. If it it is call the vet to treat. If it does not appear to be hoof rot, try soaking his hoof in epsom salt, put him in a chute with a tub of water...

    Opinions on steer please

Finish wise, I would say he is ready, he does look like he favors his right rear pastern, does he always stand with it cocked that way? Do you all not rinse or work the hair much because he is going to be slicked? We never had to slick one, just wondering if working the hair makes a difference...

    Calf Growth! I need help!!

My guess is to get his top line to be level he would need to be standing on a slope, if that is the case it is what it is. Keep feeding him and it may, over time, not be as noticeable as he grows and develops.

Is 280lb weight gain possible by August 5

Get on a routine, feed him at the same time each day. If you change feed, or amounts do it over a few days. I like to get the dry probiotics powder and add it to their feed once a week just for peace of  mind. I myself would not add any beet pulp to his feed at this time, you want him getting as...

    2017 Denver Display Bulls

If you blow the picture up, and study it, there is white in the upper leg area that skews the leg appearance, he does not to be as straight as the picture depicts. I would like to see a picture from the other side, he may look completely different.

    How much cedar fiber?

Each night after the kids kicked the steers out they would rake, fluff, and then wet down and pack the cedar. We wet the keck out of it the first time we put it down, it in layers, wetting down each layer. The biggest thing is to clean up after the calves, first thing, every time you are in...
