    Cool Bot

with a 20x30 room I would say portion part off for a cooler unless you plan on filling it with calves at the same time, otherwise your just trying to keep a large room cooled for nothing.

    Post Heat wave (ADH)

Eyes on the money have been the best looking calves at my place the past 2 years. Only thing is temperments are not great. Not crazy wild but do take extra time to break them. They just like to fight the rope and dont give up easily. I still like my sunseekers right with them and all the...

    what semen to buy

Sunseeker or Alias. We have bred a very similar Char and sunseekers are great plus they have puppy dog temperments.

    Restaurants in Des Moines

My best pick is Johnny’s Italian Steakhouse, there are 2. 1 on the south side south of the airport and one in West Des Moines. Machine Shed would be second on the list. The big steer is good but I think Johnny's is better and also cheaper. For 2 people to east at the big steer plus some drinks...

    A.I. help

only one I would think of trying is Mercedes Benz, just because of the calves look good. Tiny tim is exaclty that Tiny and I 80 is not much bigger. Head over to Hawykeye and check them out before you breed. Smoking Joe is prob one of the better most consistant Ali sons out there but I am no fan...

    Clubby Angus sires

My BC lookout calves were not impressive at all, all of them came easy, but none really took off and grew. As far as sires I have seen Aberdeen is really impressive at stud, I am surprised I have not heard of any calves out of him.

Nice calf, he has a lot of brown and alot of hair for a PB Angus, he looks more like one of my Sunseekers out of an Angus cow.

    Rusty Bolt n/c

Another trick for everyone is to take a crayon, wax, or flux put it on the bolt near the nut and heat at the opposite end you put it on. The heat will pull the wax towards the heat and through the rust. Learned this from a couple of old timers and it works everytime.

    Confused

I have seen cows show a false heat before and been preg. They will stand some and even ride other cows. It usually happens when the weather will change drastically. I have one cow that will usually do this every year but she always calves on time with the others that I AI with her. I would not...

    AI School

Genex or CRI does them, I took one at a Iowa State University farm spent about half day in class and 3 days practicing on cull cows and also heifers. If you can learn to get a 1st calf heifer done most cows are a breeze. It was nice at ISU they have a barn with 10 chutes in it all lined up so...

    Flushing Question

It takes some time putting a calf of the cow but I know many dairy cows will take about any calf and dont care at all, some I know will take 3 at a time and not fight one bit. With a little time and work I think it could pay off though and you will end up with much better results with putting...

Whats the focus of your breeding program?

1/4 to half my herd gets AId for Club calves, been using no heatwave backround genetics while building the herd. Now that I have good females I am starting to breed to some heatwave sons that will be sold and not put into the herd. Then since my whole herd is made from females I have raised on...

    Flushing Question

The only problem I see with catching the cow the calves are still going to be limited on milk. Yes they will get plenty at once but not as much as they want when they want it. So More or less they will be like bottle calves getting fed a couple times a day. The cow will have plenty of milk but...

    Flushing Question

I would say it might be worth a shot, maybe start small with 2-4 calves and see how it works. holsteins should be able to calve about anything. But getting a cow to claim one calf is a job in itself, getting them to claim 3 calves all at the same time is where I think your going to have the...

    Implanting young calves

We implant all the steers that go to the feedlot and show ring. Also if we know we are not keeping heifers for breeding we will implant those as well in the fall. It is pretty simple to do. It goes in the ear, usually the side opposite the tag. Put it under the skin on the backside of the ear. I...

    Implanting young calves

We implant as soon as they become steers. So if they get cut in the spring they get implanted then and then again in the fall when worked again. I have heard some people say that it hurts the hair by implanting but I have never had any issues. The calves that had plenty of hair before still have...

    Need Help Breaking

Best way I have found is to tie them up and carry water and feed to them for 3 days or so, work with them while they are eating. Then start leading them to water at least 2 times a day. Lead them back and feed then also. Then start washing them and blowing them off everyday. Usually a week of...
