    Shorty hf bulls

Surely there are other good Shorthorn calving ease bulls that people are using currently?  We had a Saskvalley Yesterday calf that required assistance from a first calf heifer; however, our other Yesterdays were born on their own.  Our JSF Gauge calves have been born unassisted.

    Shorty hf bulls

KL Prime Time Teddy is owned by Waukaru and he's one of the best.  Teddy's calves here have been born unassisted.  He is rather unique in his spread between birth weight EPD and his weaning and yearling EPD's.

    Bull partnerships

Sometimes these partnerships, when transitioning to different ownership, get very messy.  Who will have salvage value of the bull?  If you share possession, do both owners take good care of their bulls, or does either ranch/farm tend to let their bulls lose too much body condition, etc.?  Will...

    Implant for frame growth

Why not use an approved implant such as Ralgro?  The wisdom used to be that Ralgro (and probably also other approved implants) increased frame along with more rapid rate of gain.  I avoid using Ralgro if a 4-H steer is already large-framed.  There may be a withdrawal to observe--ask your...

    Dr. Martin Nold

Did Doc Nold purchase the entire herd from F.E. Jackson?  Jackson was Builder of the Breed in maybe '59.  Was Weston Romeo out of a Jackson cow?  Nold, a DVM, had a vet assistant who went with him along with a trailer and horse, as I recall.  His assistant would rope cattle out on the open SD...

    Dr. Martin Nold

We purchased both Weston Surprise 3rd and Weston Goliath as well as a couple of heifers from Doc Nold.  His herd had a little more frame when the industry was beginning to increase frame size.  Of course, increasing frame scores became a race, and others soon had cattle with even larger frames...

    Nitrate in well water

From the CDC. Where and how does nitrate get into drinking water?  Nitrate can occur naturally in surface and groundwater at a level that does not generally cause health problems. High levels of nitrate in well water often result from improper well construction, well location, overuse of...

    Dover/Coalpit/Orion

Lucky P, your bull selection is for solid bulls that have performed well in range conditions.  We also have used 034, Captain, and Gold Mine 2109.  Lately some of the popular lines as well as commercial Shorthorn genetics being used are low or way low on MEPD.  Once I was advised not to use more...

    Socks/stocking legs in shorthorns

I have only experience to offer, so this is not very scientific.  We have a calf with tall socks, that has parents with solid red legs unless they have a tick somewhere, with socks.  His sire shows percentage Maine on his pedigree, so the sock gene certainly would be coming in through him. ...

    ASA genetic tests

Oakview, although I do not know you personally, you are a reputable breeder and want to do the right thing.  I have no problem with test results from another lab, but some people using other labs, not the one designated by their association, (in other breeds) have used them, so they can...

    Creep Feed

articles.extension.org/pages/39695/what-are-soybean-hulls Our calves are doing pretty well on them.  We used to feed whole oats, but the soy hull byproduct is cheaper.  We like our calves to have bloom, but getting heifers too fat is all too common, especially those fed "hot house" rations so...

    Creep Feed

Yes and yes.  We feed soy hull pellets straight.  Pellets are mostly to help get the product where it is going without using the scoop shovel/Southern Indiana backhoe--soybean hulls, if not in pellets, are fluffy and do not flow very well down a metal chute, and tend to pile up.  Also, cattle...

    Possible donor cow

Gauge would be a good choice to me--E3 Durhams' comment.  We have a Gauge heifer calf from a Blizzard dam, and she may go to the local 4-H fair this summer.  Gauge added some volume and reinforces a number of desirable traits.  Our Blizzard cow was AI'd to JSF Gauge again.

    Creep Feed

Soybean hulls are 100% of our creep feed.  Our hulls are pelletized.  We are not as serious as some about showing.

    Basin hobo 79e

I have semen on this bull and considered him to be as useful as any ABS RA bull in his day.  Hobo's grandsire may have been the best bull in RA breed according to one breeder.  If you have semen you want to sell, somebody was looking for some a while back.

    Bad attitude bulls

We had a Salers X RA bull from Leachman and he and his daughters from our commercial Shorthorn cows were just fine, attitude-wise.  We used some of the early red Salers bulls AI and several of the offspring were definitely hunters and jumpers.  Memories of tracking them to a distant neighbor's...

Always be humble and kind/NC or not?

He became a 4-H steer and I've pm'd photo to you.  Probably would have been a DS carrier and had a higher BW than I like, so he went that direction.

Always be humble and kind/NC or not?

My New Year's resolution is simply to remember to write 2017 instead of 2016.
