    Dilutor Gene in Simmy Heifer

    Just got the Simmy papers and saw online where our heifer has the DL and OH Gene.  Is that anything to be worried about.  She is black with some red highlights.. The subject has been discussed but couldn't find whether it's something to be worried about.  Thanks

    $ 53k steer / MAB / Reg Shorthorn

    That's true Showstopper, but why buy any steer for that much money if you can't keep the DNA rights?  What am i missing?  Banners and Buckles?  Could I possibly get my money back?

    $ 53k steer / MAB / Reg Shorthorn

    Sorry, didn't mean to come across that way.  $ 53K is alot of money for someone to spend on a steer on an internet auction where the Seller retains the DNA rights.  It has the appearance of rushing to the next big thing where promotion and marketing creates a bubble and you never want to buy at...

    $ 53k steer / MAB / Reg Shorthorn

    Congrats to all you shorty breeders out there.  You might see more buyers coming in and raising your heifer prices replacing the Maine cross as the flavor of the day. I'm sorry to say that I won't be one, but, enjoy the ride nonetheless... Chuck.

    Making a steer wider through the back

    All good points Showstopper.  I don't know whether or not that tying their heads up for hours a day will widen their back but tying their head up builds strength and endurance to stand in that position without fidgeting.  Think about a typical show.  Wash rack, clipping stand and finally the...

    Fresh and Feminine

    Has anybody used this product?  I've seen it so many times on winning pictures that I feel like I'm missing the boat.  Does it really make them clean fronted? I'm more interested in keeping the heifer hydrated on the trip to  San Antonio.  Never used Refresh but not really excited about...

    (Updated)Done Showing-Old supplies for sale & new BOOTS

    Just a few years too late for me.  I am impressed how neat and clean everything is.  We just got back form Fort Worth and our Showbox is a mess.  I would be embarrassed to take a picture.  I could use some extra halters but they are cheap,  the halter thief shows up pretty regular at our barn...

    Getting my heifer to take a bottle calf

    I think Librarian has some good points.  Are you doing it for you, the calf or for the heifer?  Is the effort worth the sacrifice?  Yes, you will have a holstein calf but is your time better suited for something else?  The heifer will survive just fine without a calf.  She will dry up and you...

    Getting my heifer to take a bottle calf

    Put the heifer in any kind of chute, even a trim chute will work.  put karo syrup in the calf's mouth and on the utter.  the syrup is sticky and calf will start smacking and eventually start sucking.  Stop laughing everybody, the old time ways sometimes still work..

    advice needed on what's best for conditioning...

    My advise is to slow down and not rush it, have a good family time showing and don't worry about winning and pushing for extra fat for the show ring.  Instead just focus on her health and condition for breeding, if that's is what you plan to do.  She's only seven months, so just be patient and...

    My steer is not gaining at all I need help fast!

    If you want to add fat, which you need, change to a finisher and you will see a weight gain. I would also substitute 8 lbs per day of steam rolled corn, 4 lb per feeding.  Supplements are fine but he needs to be eating the right feed.  Supplement with stabilized rice bran, it gives a nice smooth...

    My steer is not gaining at all I need help fast!

    Let's cover the basics: 1.  Are you sure he is cleaning up his feed?  Hang out and watch him.  Maybe he is sick and knocking over feed 2.  Does he have diarrhea? check his temp 3.  Are you sure the scale is accurate?  Eating that much feed a day would generate at least 25lbs per week 4.  Do you...

    Sale photo help

    Take several pics, but you should lose the ladder and hay.  It distracts my attention away from the heifer.  Also, I can see your shadow and it pulls my focus away

    Sale photo help

    I like the hay bale idea but space her away from it and don't shoot down.  Most pics have shoulder at eye level.  A good photographer makes it look easy. The snow calf pic is awesome.  It gives me a reference with the posts in the background. That one is a calendar shot for sure. Just have fun...

    Sale photo help

    I'm no expert but you need some depth and scale.  Clear the snow out so your surface is flat and not piled up.  Have her stand on a green rug, fake grass or just pull the snow back with a shovel..  The snow contrasts with the splotchy background.  I like the red wood look but it's weathered. ...

    Shark Cartilage

    Trim the back hooves and see if that works.  Anti-pop works before the show and you can order it online.  Replamin Gel has Selenium which can ease the popping but research has shown that Selenium poisoning can result when the dietary selenium exceeds 5 ppm.

    Dumb Questions

    Congratulations and welcome to the Club!  Ask a question like this and you will get lots of answers but just do a search at the top for Daily Hair Care and that will provide alot of suggestions.  Steer or Heifer?  Is your show a slick sheer or hair?  It's only the beginning of good things to...

    my steer needs to gain weight!

    Great recommendations Cowman.    You are right, all steers are different and 3lbs a day is a good target but I don't understand how a 600 lb steer is eating 20lbs a day and not gaining weight! You really need to know the weight at a given time.  We weigh ours every two weeks so we can calculate...

    my steer needs to gain weight!

    When is the show?  It's a marathon, not a 100 dash so it just takes time.  If he weighs 600 lbs and you feed him 2pct of body weight, that is 12 lbs a day.  He should gain 2lbs a day on a finisher but it all depends on your steer and what he looks like now.  Weigh him regularly and a good goal...
