    Doug parett

I took a few of Dr. Parrett's classes at U of I and showed a few time when he judged. He does know a thing or two about cattle.  He also knows a bit about coaching a judging team or two. It's been a while but he lined them up in a way that you could follow even if you didn't agree.

bred 7 year old cow dies

justintime I had not read that about the milk.  Good to know. We put magnets in all of our replacements when we do pelvic measurements.  We learned our lesson the hard way of course.

    Feeding Netwrapped Bales

I'm not saying anyone is wrong.  But I'm curious if the lack of apparent waste is all that accurate.  I pull out the small core of a bale that does not process well each day and let the cows eat that.  It initially looks like they clean it all up.  But there is quite a bit of stomping in that...

    Feeding Netwrapped Bales

Yes we have had a cow choke.  I got lucky because I saw her go over on her side and there was one lone string hanging out the side of her mouth.  One of our vets said they have had cows choke to death.  I can't remember who told me but they had a cow eat enough she stopped everything up and...

    Feeding Netwrapped Bales

I thought the obvious answer was no way but I see I was wrong. We process so of course the net wrap comes off for that.  We take the wrap off the few bales we put out for odd groups too.  Our experience is it gets tangled in everything, stomped into the ground, and the cows can choke.  I am not...

    castrating persistant problem

I agree a 2nd opinion would be a good idea.  Something keeps that infection coming back.  Our calf took about 2 weeks after the last swelling temp spike before I liked the way he acted and ate all of the time.  He was not off feed the entire 2 weeks but had times when he just didn't look very...

    castrating persistant problem

We have had a few over the years but it is pretty rare.  The last one this year was because it was brand new and too sharp. What is the vet having you do after he/she leaves?  What kind of antibiotic has he/she been using? The one this fall did about the same thing as yours except he did go...

    Need some feed suggestions

I agree with obie it is not always successful. Why do you want to make a change?  I have spent a fortune on show feeds over the years.  I am convinced the really wet, uniform looking feed is for my benefit not the cattle.

If I decide to breed her to a clubby bull, which one ?? UPDATED 11-12-13

Congratulations!  That is a great day. Did you breed the cow back the same way?

    What to breed her to????

Sandy if only I knew the secret to making all breeding decisions work!  Our I-80s flat out did not want to live.  They had no vigor.  They were not born into mud and left in the cold.  They were in the calving barn and treated exactly the same as the other calves that wanted to live.  Good...

Portable heater for use in barn

Is the heater for you or the calves? I know 2 guys that burned down barns using them.  The one made the conscious decision to leave it running unattended over night with cattle loose in the barn.  He lost a barn, equipment, hay, and cattle.  I will assume this is not your intention.

    Pinched nerve in heifer's back

We had a heifer this year prolapse after calving too long.  I flat out screwed up and had her in the wrong pen. I have not made that mistake before so I was not giving up until she was done breathing.  At 6 weeks, yes weeks, she stood to drink.  It took her another 2-3 weeks to be able to walk...

    What to breed her to????

I would not count on 1-80 to clean up a front end.  I know that he does for many.  That was definitely not the case here.  Structure was an issue on the ones of ours that bothered to live.  Their hocks touch when they walk and I have never, ever had a cow that does that.  Have you measured her...

    Nations cowherd-defects

How many cattle are in the US as of today?  What is the 10-13% based on specifically?    The people who went through the blizzard aren't sure how many cows are even dead so coming up with some percentage of cattle carrying a genetic defect would seem rather challenging. Commercial guys are not...

    A Few Fallborn Pictures

Nice set of calves.  Hope to see updated pics as they get older.

    Whole Corn vs. Cracked Corn

I would pay someone well to come in to pick and process ear corn.  But I'm afraid in our area those days are long gone. We started feeding out of a bin today that has been there about 2 weeks.  I had planned on cracking it but had a grinder issue so they are getting scuffed up whole corn in the...

    Vita ferm question

While we didn't have serious chronic health issues or awful conception I do think it helps.  Of course there are too many variables for me to chalk it up to that alone. We use Concept Aid from February until November then switch to the regular mineral. We bump it up generally from March...

at the end of the rope

aj not quite an accurate statement. We have no "breed loyalty" and we absolutely will stand behind what we sell.  Club calves, heifers, cows, and bulls.  Absolutes aside from death and taxes aren't all that beneficial to anyone.

    Vita ferm question

If they are overconsuming for more than a few days then I put out salt.  Otherwise I do not. We have tried it both ways and if on the regular Vita Ferm they usually leave the salt.  On the Concept Aid they will eat a little more salt but not much. My cows seem to want salt in the fall more...
