    Defect or just tough luck?

We have a calf with some issues. He doesn't fully fit into any of the genetic defects I know of, but I could be wrong. He is fine back to his flank/hooks. Then he seems to slope off steep into his pins. Underdeveloped hindquarters and the rear legs are bad. Hock is stiff; will not move either...

How long do YOU turn one out before calving

Hey guys, When you have a show heifer, how long before calving do you kick her out of the show barn/feed? We have had some bad luck in the past with them being too fat; fed good until 2 months before calving. This year, we had one due in January. Put her out Aug-Oct1. Back in for 2 weeks, small...

    More intriguing breeding?

Depends of the heifer. If shes a big girl, jpj; more moderate, northern improvement. If I were a SH person, possibly JPJ b/c the calf will be a higher % (over 1/2).

    A Simmental Decision

Of the three, I would use Bettis. I don't know the mating would hit a home run, but the buyer could feel very confident that she would be able to have the calf. IMO he's going to help you on rib; I see him as a maternal CE bull; not going to always make a showcalf but a really nice cow prospect...

    Flushing Question

with us it's 60 days or work her off  her 2nd heat. Whichever comes later. Others can probably give you better info; just what we do.  Cowboy: you beat me typing. I'm glad that what I have been doing is what you are advising  ;D

    Flushing Question

Our embryologist has always advised us to breed them on their 2nd heat after flushing. I think you can get her bred, but it will be a few weeks later than you are hoping for. It's healthy for her body to get pregnant and have a baby, so I don't think you'd be working her too hard.

Duff New Edition and Grandmaster Bulls

I 2nd the GM. We've seen some good cattle out of him and have had a lot of success with him on our shorthorn donor cow. He will throw light  bw's (some have been a tick bigger out of her, but it is from her). Calves are really stout. Good depth, length. He's going to moderate frame for you and...

    carpe deim heifer

Yeah, but he throws them a lot bigger than 65.  ;) Nice heifer. Best wishes with her in the future. Looks like she could make a really neat producer on down the road.

SHOULDER...look at the video and it's really bold. I think he's a nice calf, just wish he was smoother there.

    Breeding suggestion

Thank you both for your input. Leanbeef, you brought up a few I hadn't considered, but will definately look into. VCSF, funny, I have considered Trademark. He kind of led me into Rendition (baldy son.) We must think somewhat alike. 90% of my simmys go back to Ebony Antoinette, and I wouldn't...

    Breeding suggestion

I guess I'm going to join the never ending list of people asking for breeding advice. I guess I'm just curious as to what everyone else would do. I have a PB simmy heifer out of Momentum and an Encore x Antoinette's Joy cow. She is about what you'd expect from the pedigree. She's a 5.5 frame...

    How to AI?

I'm going to agree with BS on this. Do your homework before you go sticking clubby up your cow. If it misses, the calf is going be sorry. Probably worse than your natural bred cows. There is no easier way for your dad to decide that AI is not for him, or you, is for that first calf to be sorry...

Making tail hair into a ball

The key is to pull the top hairs up and use a hairclip to hold them out of the way. Mold the rest of the hair into that teardrop shape with a fair bit of glue. You need to be hands on with it. Don't be afraid to get sticky. Get it looking like you want it. After it's set, take the top hairs out...

triple c hidden power or triple c el poderosa rey

I agree the Reymonds are stout, deep, and growthy. Ours were a little less attractive; down headed type of cattle with some throat. But real honest and beefy. Calved out small and easily. I've seen a few that were more attractive, but I wouldn't use him on a cow that needed refinement. Overall...

Q-Dog Heifer Clipped Up For First Time - Thoughts??

Agreed (clapping) Really nice heifer. She sure cleaned up well. I think your daughter will have a fun year with her. It's great to hear she's involved and enjoys what she's doing!

    Club Calf Cows

I reccommend you find some good  Simmangus cross cows with a lot of belly, really sound complete cows. Breed them to the hotter clubby bulls and you should be off to a good start. Or breed them to a maternal Maine bull, keep their heifers, and breed those cattle to the clubby bulls. A lot of...

    Breaking Bulls

I would just go ahead and put in a permanent ring. We showed a bull last year with one, and it was no trouble. Get someone who knows what they're doing, and it's not a big deal to get it in. Didn't affect ours on eating or anything like that. It was just easier for us to have a ring in him than...
