I was wondering on what any of you thought on the Duff New Edition and Grandmaster bulls?  I was thinking on using Duff on my 75% simmy heifer.  I've read that he is calving ease, but I wanted to know more from people who have heard or have used him.  I'm also thinking on using the Grandmaster bull on my angus (with a little chi) cow. Any comments are appreciated!

I would be a little leery with using New Edition on a heifer but that's just me. If I was going to go with a Duff for a heifer I would go with either Duff Body Builder 763 or DCC New Look 3001. Both are good looking bulls. Keep in mine these bulls will downsize on frame. Good luck.  <beer>

WE have a NEW EDITION son we used on heifers last year and read his EPD'S  JUST before calving and they had him a 4+ ,never had any problems on crossbred heifers ,purebred charolais heifers and reg. Angus ....

So much for EPD'S , HAD A BULL THAT WAS BRED TO 1200 HEAD of heifers and just had to help a few maine cross heifers ..  One registered guy liked him and used him on a bunch of registered 5175 bando DAUGHTERS and the EPD'S have never been under 3+ since .....The mother of this NEW edition BULL was out of that bull...

Ok thanks! So I'm not using New Edition any more. Although, I do like body builder.  Are his calves just as good? I will keep watching the heifer to see what her size will be.  She kind of looks lilke she could get tall.  Her mom is pretty big, so we will see!

CAB, a regular poster on this site has some very nice New Addition calves. Maybe he will post about the bulls calving ease. I sure liked his New Addition heifers. Don't rule him out yet.

Here comes your first Grandmaster vote ! I did my homework on him and talked to a bunch of respected simmy breeders , all with good things to say about the bull. I've personally seen a bunch of bulls out of him I really liked , stout , deep , and thick. I bred him to my first calf heifers with confidence this year. I've seen just a few heifers out of him and liked them also. Rumour has it they come small and then really turn it on after a month of age. Ill know in march what they are born like , personally never seen a newborn but I sure like what I see in the older calves.

I 2nd the GM. We've seen some good cattle out of him and have had a lot of success with him on our shorthorn donor cow. He will throw light  bw's (some have been a tick bigger out of her, but it is from her). Calves are really stout. Good depth, length. He's going to moderate frame for you and add some quality. Our yearling bull from him and the shorty cow is hairier than his mama and GM helped us out in the flex in the rear wheels. I personally think he'd click with the heifer quite well in addition to breeding him to the cow. The cow family GM is out of is phenomenal. Really nice females. His sire is a known maternal simmy bull. So, you've got some of the better genetics in the simmy breed available to help you get some good babies. Should make good mama  cows and be stout enough for you to show decently as steers.

Thanks for the replies so far! They are exactly what I've been looking for! As far as New Edition, I still want to use him. I will keep asking around about him.  I've not heard many people say that he's not a heifer bull.  I just wanted a good angus to breed to the heifer to increase her chances of not having a large calf/difficulty.  What about Northern Imrovement? Would you say he sires better calves than New Edition? I've read that he's a heifer bull? As far as Grandmaster, I really like him.  I just wanted some reassurance.  If I really wanted to could I use him on the heifer? She's already a simmy.  About downsizing.. is that a good or bad thing? My cow is not a large cow.... I'm 5'6 around 5'7 and she's about as tall as me.  She's probably one of our smaller frame cows.  I want to breed her to Grandmaster in order to add some muscle and shape as well as depth to her calf.  Out of the two calves we have, I want to sell maybe at least one for $1500 and up? The money would be used towards buying a nice show steer for my senior year. BY using these bulls would the calves be marketable to the show world? Any comments help!!

Do you know how to frame score an animal?  Get on the Angus.org website, do a quick search... and begin to measure these animals to predict what they are.. that's far more accurate than guessing heights.

Northern Imp... is an awesome choice to use on any kind of heifer but Angus.

Marketable in the show world, is only as accurate as having one particular person who sees your animals as an asset- and is willing to purchase it.  That's it... plain and simple...

Here is a Grandmaster I had last spring at one month, out of a Dream-On cow.  He was 80 pounds at birth,  I sold him in September as a bull prospect at six months and 600 pounds.  All grass and milk, and then two weeks on feed after weaning.

I have had New Editions and Grandmaster's .  I will say that I have never had any calving problems from New Edition.  They can come a little heavier and are stout at birth.  I would not call him a true heifer bull.  They have a good look with more power, and bone than your typical angus.  My Grandmasters have been great.  I used him for the first time last year and love my calves so far.  We tripled the number that we bred him to this year.  The calf in the pic is a 3/4 Grandmaster out of a Macho x Angus cow.

We had a Sp The Answer daughter and I love that heifer! She was nice looking and very sound. She did really well in the ring too. He is a calving ease bull. She brought pretty good money for us as well when we sold her. You can go to out page and take a look at her. He's was newer bull at the time and it's not like us to pick one so new without seeing progeny. I don't regret him using him one bit! I hated for my dad to sell her cause she would have made a great replacement heifer in our small herd. I'm not sure what his frame score is but I do know that the Duff's will downsize the frame. I do like their progeny their daughters are very maternal and have good udder quality. All their calves are from what I have seen are chunky and have muscle.

The Answer has worked REALLY well on our heifers....bred every one to him this year.  They come small, have some grow to 'em, and end up with some style.  We've used a lot of New Edition on our cows and LOVE his females.  He's not the heifer bull that The Answer is.  We had a New Edition son as a clean up the last couple of years and he did a nice job.

I'm glad he has! I really liked the calf we had! Her disposition was nice too. Never had a problem with her. We have thought about using New Edition or Body Builder on one of cows. Still not really sure yet. There are a couple of bulls I'm playing around with for her. She is bred clubby right now and I have thought about the Charolais bull Fire Water. We still have plenty of time. :)
