    Any suggestions for me?

Our 14 year old son had to have his appendix out last Friday.  He had some complications during the surgery (an artery was nicked) so his recovery is going to take a while.  My main problem is keeping him from showing until he's healed up.  We're going to a show this weekend and he said his...

Who is going to their state fair this year?

Not sure what all we're taking just yet.  I entered one Chi heifer for Mike so we could get a camping site.  Boys will show the rest.  We usually try to take 3 chis, 2 crossbreds and 2 maines.  Have 5 shows in 3 days that way! Melinda

    Any Missouri shows???

Well, you have the link for the Cattlemen's shows. Most county fairs here in MO are in July and August.  How far from home do you want to travel?  Weekends or weekdays? I can give you rough estimates of when several are in central MO, but exact dates may not be published just yet...

    Show Heifers & heats

Last year one of our heifers came in as we were packing to leave for the Maine Jr. National in Texas.  Brought in the bull, he bred her twice and we drove for 11 hours.  Figured there was no way she'd ever stick.  Well, we had a calf about 2 days before her due date.  (lol)  They never fail to...

    Show Heifers & heats

Hmmm.....actually all our theories are out the window this year.  One show heifer was letting everyone in three counties know every time she was in heat.  The other has such quiet heats we have a hard time really knowing if she's in heat or not.  ::)  Both get the same feed and have basically...

Do you sync or use natural heats?

We have synched some for implanting embryos but that's all the synch work we'll do.  It does spread out the breeding season but it's just not cost effective for us to synch them all. Melinda

    Birthweights

Average birthweight around here is around 85 pounds.  Our cows can easily handle having 90+ pounders.  Have one cow who has had more than one over 100#s unassisted.  You'd never think it to look at her.  We do have one cow, former show heifer, who has an odd shaped pelvis and cannot calve as big...

    ET Schools

Mike had talked to Carl at Cattle Visions but the name of the guy he suggested escapes me.  I need to call him again and try to get some contact info.  I'm hoping this school is in the fall and the boys and I could do some field trips while Mike's in class.  I think we're going to send Chris...

    How was your week?

Well, it's been a week of adjustment around here.  Mike's sister's funeral was last weekend.  She died suddenly from a brain aneurysm on May 1st.  The boys have begun 3 a day rinsings of their heifers to try to get some hair growth again.  We've finally gotten the last of the cow/calf pairs...

    ET Schools

Hey all.  We're interested in learning how to put in our own embryos.  Any recommendations as to who's a good teacher.  Plenty of experience AIing (15 years now).  Thanks. Melinda

    Summer Hair Care Program

I plan on showing this to our boys next week.  We're in the middle of a family crisis right now, but next week it's back to lots of work on the heifers.  You've got lots of good info in that article. Melinda

    Show question of the week!?

For our county fair we encourage the judge to ask lots of questions.  Honestly, if they're enrolled in the beef project, they need to be learning about the beef industry.  Of course, we're kinda hard on that with our kids.  ;D  We encourage the judge to ask if heifers are bred, when they were...

    06 sync breeding results

Just went through our records today and man did the weather cause chaos with our expected calving dates!  ::) Our cows that were AI ed and stuck (no bull in there for more than one cycle) ranged from 248 days to 299!!!!!  Yes, there is an obvious correlation between the temps and barometer and...

    ALI as cows

We've had some nice Ali's over the last 3 years.  Most of the heifers have sold as calves.  We do have a couple that we'll breed this year.  So far they're looking nice. Melinda

    Clipping and Fitting Clinic

Hey guys.  Our 4-H club is hosting a fitting and clipping clinic in Mexico, MO on April 27-29.  Chuck and Karen McCullough will be teaching the kids all about show cattle.  We still have a few spaces open if you're interested.  It's $50 for the entire time.  Runs Friday night thru Sunday...

    Pearson Square

That will be a great homeschool project for the boys.  We just completed 2 weeks of intensive judging classes with them.  They both qualified for the county 4-H team to go on to state competition in Sept.  (clapping)  Both have been in the past.  The 14 yo is now on the senior team and the 12...

    Ali calves in heifers

We've had lots of nice ones though.  Be sure not to write them off too early.  They really do change A LOT as they go.  We have one that's nearly 2 months old now and WOW has he gotten better.  He's in our top 10 calves now.  You just never know. Melinda
