Article on youth programs - good read

That is 100% wrong.  I know plenty of "breeders" who raise livestock simply for the purple banners.  That is a far cry from "role in food production." The article was not poorly written, nor was it terrible. It was simply stating the truth.  I firmly believe that plenty of non-winners give up...

“New” North American Shorthorn Genetic Evaluation

The last time the shorthorn messed with their EPD's, all their BW epd's went down dramatically, so am I to guess that is what happened again?  Especially if they are trying to compete with the red angus, gelv, angus. I also have to chuckle at the last line: Within the Shorthorn breed, we have...

Article on youth programs - good read

http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/storyline/wp/2014/08/26/piggy-bank/?tid=sm_fb Thought this was a really interesting read.....  lots of good points on both sides. Everyone thoughts?

    Judge selection for major shows

This was not a youth show, but open show.  I and others knew the judge had connections with the exhibitors because it was no secret.  And yes, popular opinion, even among exhibitors that did well, that the judge obviously went against better choices and then did his best to justify his...

    Judge selection for major shows

If you do well and deserve it, then no, it is not wrong.  If another animal should have won or placed higher and doesn't because of the connection, then yes, it is wrong.

    Judge selection for major shows

I think the female part of the show was judged fair.  Damar had a tremendous set of females and won, rightfully so.  The bull show was/is the issue and this is where the judge had "connections".  Much better bulls left standing (and no, this I am definitely not the only one that thought this.)

    Judge selection for major shows

I do not have a dog in the fight, but a recent trip to the Iowa State Fair red angus show got me thinking.  How do other state fairs or major shows, select a judge?  Is it by blind selection, suggestions from breed reps, a list? Seems odd that a red breeder with several VERY close ties to some...

How do you determine Donor material?

Some consider a "donor female" anything can is not bred and is being sold, or that can not raise their own calf due to lack of milking ability or bad mothering ability or unable to carry of pregnancy.  That is why I wish that more breed associations would offer the ability to look up offspring...

Desperate need of help with open wounds due to halter breaking!!

Because you a new to this, I am going to cut you some slack, but I am going to be a bit forward in my words. If I was this steer, I would HATE YOUR GUTS.  Every time that calf see's you, you make him feel pain.  You injure him. So, that being said, you have a long road in front of you.  Take...

    DMSO

DMSO is a great solvent.... but is also a carcinogen to humans. Doubtful if it is allowed in market shows. Probably depends on what is mixed with it (rarely is it used by itself).

Muck Boot fund raises for HSUS

Wow, you are so egotistical I bet your shadow doesn't even like you. How DARE you say "Your definition is likely one of disregard."  YOU DO NOT KNOW ME.  YOU DO NOT KNOW MY LIVESTOCK OPERATION OR MANAGEMENT.  How DARE you. But then again, you, and your comrades in the HSUS, PETA and ALF, all...

    everclear in cattle

Is your heifer going to be a "good drunk" or a "bad drunk", or do you know?  The answer to that will determine the use of everclear. Is your heifer wild? Spooky? Not broke?  That will also determine if you use a "cheater drug".    Remember EVERY drug can have very adverse affects that will...

Muck Boot fund raises for HSUS

Xbar, I am adamantly opposed to their definition of "suffering".  I adamantly oppose their definition of "proper".  I also adamantly oppose their definition of "compassion".  I also adamantly oppose their definition of "humane and environmentally sustainable agriculture".  I suppose you think...

    Cattle prices wow!

Tyson just announced they were closing a beef processing plant in MN due to lack of cattle.  I have heard many experts say high beef prices are here for at least 5 more years.  Keep in mind those might have been the same experts that predicted great farming income in the late 70's and early...

    Tyler Trihus market heifer

Thanks for the explanation mainecattlemother.  I do find it hard that the heifer was shown 27 times and never went to a terminal show, but it is possible.  And maybe it was done by design.  I do find the question intriguing though. So many times you hear about this type of heifer, that wins...

    Unprofessionalism

I do not know Ruble so am only going on the original post.  But what the judge did was not "boneheaded" but totally inexcusable.  Using a cell phone while judging??? (I do not care the reason.) Selfie in the ring? (Refer to above) Judging showmanship based on a collegiate choice? Those things...

    Tyler Trihus market heifer

So if this Trihus market heifer won everywhere, why SHOULD she still be alive? Wouldn't she have been slaughtered at a terminal show?

    Announcement from Tyson Foods

All the comments are focused on Zilmax, but if you re-read the announcement, it says "tested positive for antibiotics and/or zilmax".  And again, maybe labeling rules were not followed via the show calves vs. feed lot calves. I do not know but that could be the case. Zilmax is not cheap, so I...

    Tyler Trihus market heifer

I thought all state fair market shows were terminal.  I have heard of some ovaries/eggs being harvested at time of slaughter, but did not think the market animal was allowed to go back to the farm. The Iowa State fair is terminal. What shows did Tyler attend? I do agree with cowpoke.... many...
