worked with a feed nutritionist to modify AAOK's feed ration for a grower ration and adjust according to what we have locally that is reasonablely cheap and substitute. Calves really like it. We taken molasses out of the show ration and just added cherry oil. they don't seem to go off feed as...
We had a steer 2 years ago from a major breeder. We tried for 4 months just to get him haltered. Purchased in a pasture sale. He must have been in one big pasture. He tore up more gates than any calf we ever had. Never came out of the corner of the pen. had short small sharp horns he used very...
The gentleman who took care of one of my orphan calves had it in his feed. The calf's hair coat is unbelievable. Does it help skin and hair? I was thinking of sunflower oil.
Depends on the breeding on the shorthorn you used. There are shorthorns who will throw black around muzzle and tail. They are not suppose to, and I thought at one time, Rodeo Drive was one of those bulls that would put a black muzzle on his calves at one time.
DO you think there is semen left around on Defender's PRomise? R. Lee Johnson family is just outside Columbus, OH. I just wonder if its still out there.
Awesome picture! That is what I am trying to put back on my shorthorns is that head! I really like that head shape and it seems to work as previously mentioned in another thread. Looks like this guy genetics were tightly managed.
hard to tell from picture
but...looks like he is moderate and deep sided definitely has some hair to him if you want that. sure would work on some bigger made cows to moderate size maybe add some flesh.
If you are breeding for purely terminal calves
double vision really made some nice steers, Jake's Proud Jazz, matt L has Red White and Roan bull the calves look spot on for terminal animals. Exile has some nice steers. I like starburst on the right cow.
What are the breeding on the cows you are...
I don't know when your final show is, but rinse rinse rinse and brush. That will help his overrall appearence. He is a great profiling steer. Baldy's always catching eye. I think he is more moderate than black and white calf. When is your final show?
There was a thread on here sometime back. Posted a few calves one of the owners. I saw the bull when he saw at Duis Farms dispersal. He is thick and has some bone. His pedigree carries some weight. I have heard of few experience mentioned above. Not so much about weight but shape of the calves...
When I talked to the powers that are doing the research,(mind you this is my little mind summarizing data) they said that PH and DS reside on the same DNA strand. Theory is when you match up two carriers DSc and PHc the defect is more pronounced. TH is different strand and doesn't seem to effect...
Two of the best matings on our Mossy Oak cow were Simmi and Maine. The Simmi calf was actually a steer that had some style and was a baldy. The heifer was out of a purebred Maine bull that is a son of BPF Boomer(full sib to Sooner) he is calving ease deluxe as well. The female has alll the...
Do you have a primary base in your females? What are the birthweights on the dams of the heifers? Lots of options just opinion of what direction you would want to go with the calves. Angus, Shorthorn, Simmi, Red Angus, Maine, Galloway, Char.....
If you are looking for a show heifer- cates and sullivan are like Ford everyone knows the name. But there are lots of breeders out there making competitative show stock and you can acquire heifers at a reasonable price. We had a great one from wes keller and I know zach gray has some good...
When I had bot a lot of Diamond leggs I actually contacted the breeders. The picture that is always mistaken for Leggs is not him at all but a brother red and white. Not sure there was any pictures of Leggs. someone somewhere might have one. But i couldn't find one in my research about 5 years...
Flush part is up to you, but I am huge on head shape on my animals. I have only flushed one cow because she meets our criteria and has had some of the best calves that sell well(as well as her genetics and where she came from). Finallly got a couple daughters out of her. Hoping to replicate her...
Breed a DSC or DSH to a PHC cow. THE worst combination. calf can have some of the most exaggerated defect to the point of immobility. I have had 4 DS calves. one of the four lived to weight that was able to be fed and butchered. super small and one limb affected. the other three could not move...
What I found strange, I sold a group of weaning calves. One red, one black and one smoke. My smoke went for a premium and the black followed with the red calf at the bottom off by few cents. But on the hook my reds are out performing in hanging. My meat customers want more "what ever that last...
