    Gestation date question

My neighbor is a life time Simmental breeder who tells me that he generally figures his due dates at 290 days on his cows.  He says that he has several each year that may go 295.  I don't know if that would translate over to Angus cows bred by Simmy bulls or not.  I usually figure 283 on our...

North Iowa Beef Clinic scheduled for 4/14

I don't believe there will be a charge or at least not very much.    We've lined up sponsors for most of the expense.  I'll post a flyer as soon as the NIACC group gets them finished.

if you had to start all over

I would buy embryos out of the best cow in herds that I admire mated to bulls that I have followed for more than one calf crop.  Might not be as exciting as pulling the lever on a slot machine or trying to find the "gold nugget" weanling, but it sure would have a lot better chance of paying off...

Interesting reading on Sullivan flyer !!!!!

There  were a lot of good bulls in Denver this year, but as has been stated by others on here many of those bulls mated to a 6 frame or less cow would produce IMHO a smaller framed  calf than most people are looking for in their feed lots.    The Shorthorn breed has had larger frame sizes, etc...

    Shorthorn Historians ---Need some info!!

Do any of you Shorthorn historians remember breeders from north Iowa back in the 60's named Lester Luckason or Bob Sherrard?  My understanding is that both these gentlemen were involved in raising Shorthorns in our county around that time.  We're interested in finding out more about the...

    Sink or Swim Sale

GRF is right--- there's some good heifers on this sale.  I particularly like the Lot 11 Simplicity X Nautica/Carly, Lot 1 Hard Drive X Ali, and Lot 5 Simplicity X Open Bar.  The dams of Lot 5 & 11 have been favorites of mine for some time.

    Power in the Plains....WOW

I was in Wichita for a few hours this week.  Sure wish I'd had an extra day to run out and see the cattle in person.  I hate it when my job gets in the way of my cattle obsession!!Ha Ha!

    Feeding baled cornstalks.

I feed a combination of hay & corn stalk bales each year.   I have put them in side by side feeders or alternated one bale of stalks then one bale of hay.  I've even used a 2 bales of stalks to 1 bale of hay ratio with success.    I usually feed a small amount of grain/DDGs mixed with a rumensin...

    Sullivan's Sale

Great sale!!  Tremendous quality top to bottom!  John, family, and crew did an awesome job again this year.  I think they could almost start their own breed with the Vegas X 898  line and the other Shorthorn Plus calves.    Congratulations to John, John, and all the crew!!

    NIACC Club Calf Sale

I saw the NIACC calves this morning and Braun's calves on Saturday.  Should be a very impressive offering.  The Lot 12 steer really caught my eye as well as a couple of younger steers that have a lot of upside in their future.  Great sale offering!!

Beef industry variations in different countries

AJ--if you see JIT has posted something please just ignore it and go on to another post.     All of us realize that for some unknown reason you don't like JIT.    Your complete disdain for anything that JIT posts was apparent a long time ago.   It got really tedious then and its still tedious...

Where Great Females Make A Difference

the genetics of color can be a very funny thing.  I don't believe I've ever seen a true mono color Shorthorn--I'm not saying they don't exist, I've just never seen one and I've looked at a lot of shorthorns over the last few years.  I've never had a completely white one--usually there are red...
