I was wondering who has kids.

My wife and I are blessed with 3 children.  All of them have shown cattle.  The oldest, a boy, just started law school in September.  The middle child (boy #2) is a freshmen in college and is playing Captain Hook in the college musical, "Peter Pan".  Our youngest is 11, she is very active in...

I believe he is a son of the original Heatwave.

what do you think of White Boy?

We have a May heifer calf out of White Boy from a Black Impact cow.  We like her, but really wanted a bull calf to use as a steer.  Nice smoke color with a little white on face, belly and tail.  Used him again on a Cigar cow this year.  Our heifer is clean fronted, moderately thick, and has...

    Cures for warts on calves

We haven't dealt with warts in a long time.  If they are small enough we simple scrape them off with our fingernails.  Large toenail clippers (use on humans) work as well.  For bigger warts we douse them with iodine for a couple of days and then cut them off with sharp surgical scissors or use a...

    Louisville, Southern Indy???

Here are a few non-cattle related things.  The Louisville Slugger bat factory and museum.  There are a number of distilleries that offer tours on what is known as the Bourbon trail.  Someone already mentioned Churchhill Downs.  There are plenty of decent places to eat as well.

    Guessing Weight

TCR, If you use one of those tapes on calves under 500# I agree.  I have found that using the hoof circumference tapes on newborn calves isn't as accurate as I would like either.  We use the tape as more of a guage of how our steers are gaining weight.  In fact, our county fair calves are...

    Guessing Weight

Go to your local Tractor Supply or similar store and buy a beef cattle weight estimation tape.  They work OK and should be accurate within 50 lbs.  If you don't have a store near you, you can order one from Nasco or maybe even Sullivan's (can't say for sure).

    Battle Hymn of the Republic

Known that song for a long time but I will always remember about 30 years ago when as a freshman in high school I was chosen to sing in one of the choirs at our county music festival.  This is an annual event that features 3 choirs, elementary school, juniior high and high school, along with two...

    Walking steers

I addition to the walking it is best to have an exercise area for your calves as well.  May be my imagination, but since we have begun allowing the calves to "roam" it makes it easier to handle them under halter because they don't have as much pent up energy.  Think about what it's like when the...

    Gas Milage!!!

I wish you could buy road diesel for 4.19 here.  Some places are up to as much as 4.50.  Can't complain too much as my new Ram gets 21-23 MPG.  Still wish the price of fuel would come down.

    Flights

Got caught up in the whole mess last week.  Even though I was booked on United wound up stuck in Chicago (O'Hare) last Thursday.  Waited in line with a number or my "closest friends" for ~2.5 hours to get rebooked on a flight the next day.  Sad part is I paid nearly as much for night in a hotel...

    Downfalls to biofuels...weigh in

The biofuels "solution" backlash has already affected other commodity based endeavors beyond livestock for food.  The food manufacturing industry is now paying record high prices for sweetener, soybean oil, and other comodity items.  This will lead to higher grocery bills for everyone.  Even...

    increasing protein in feed

I would recommend Calf Manna.  If your local mill or co-op doesn't carry it see what they have available in pellet form that could be used.  Most should carry something in the 30 - 40 % CP range.  Good Luck.

    6 dollar corn

Kanshow I couldn't agree more, except that the prices for the 4-H market hogs at our fair are way higher per pound than what our beef get.  So with the increase in the cost of feed this year the hog kids will not make the killing that they normally do.  My concern is that some of the market...

    Where are you from

Are you ready for this.  We live in Panama............that is Panama, NY.  Very close to the PA state line, approximately 45 miles East of Erie, PA, 65 south of Buffalo, NY, but nowhere near the Big Apple.

    6 dollar corn

I see that earlier in the thread there was mention of not being able to sell day old holstein bull calves at the auction barns.  That was the case a couple of weeks ago here.  I heard that the sale barn actually sent one dairyman a bill for getting rid of the calves that he sent one day.  As far...

    What are Easter plans?

Dutch Pride you couldn't be more right!!  Our Easter day will definitely be hectic.  Sunrise service in the morning with the youth group leading the service, our 17 year old is delivering the message for that service.  During our normal worship service that morning our choir and drama team are...

    Feed Prices

Just curious how much everyone is seeing the price of their feed go up.  We have a local mill custom mix a ration for our show calves that is now costing ~$19/cwt.  We have always thought it would be cheaper to use our own ration, but am beginning to wonder if we wouldn't be better off to feed...
