    Chapter Angus Herd Bull Suggestions

The bull I suggested, Bruin  Uproar, his dam is a full sib to VRD 7078.  Great minds think alike  <beer>

Higher losses before weaning for lighter birth weight calves!

The point to take away form all of this is that any extreme is not helpful.  Birthweights need to be moderated but they don't need to keep going lower.  Any cow that can't easily have an 80-85lb calf should have been hamburger. Big dead calves don't make you money and neither do sickly little runts.

That and Resource is one of their best as far as semen production goes so he easily keeps up, even with high demand. Airgator - scale crushing is great if you aren't paying for the feed.  My cows are right where I want them; ~6 frame and ~1500lbs.  I don't want to add frame.  Some guys do.  My...

    Chapter Angus Herd Bull Suggestions

You're in a tough spot.  Using calving ease on top of calving ease for so long, you've bred yourself into a bit of a corner.  Many performance bulls are going to cause you some calving difficulty on the frailer type cows.  In your situation I'd suggest Sitz Upward 307R and any of his more...

Around here it's the bigger frame that is making Renown more sought after.  My Resource calves are far from small in my opinion so I am not eager to go bigger.

    Bad attitude bulls

Rumour was that one of the original imports was not the bull that was selected to come overseas.  The feeling was that after the bull was picked, someone pulled the ol' switcheroo before he was loaded on the boat and sent the goofy buggers over here. Of course that's only a rumour...

    Bad attitude bulls

Yes EXT calves are goofy.  Most are halter breakable and they are certainly manageable as cows.  I'd take a 100 of them in a heartbeat. Easy on the limos there guys!  The older and fullblood bulls were certainly not good but I'd stack most current limo bulls up against any of the other breeds'...

Yup all Resource.  Resource has been consistent that's for sure.  Whether you like the progeny or not, they are predictable.  I used the yearling bull (NYK 5C) quite a bit this year.  Hoping he can stamp them like his daddy.

Fish - sent you a PM so I don't derail the tread. Attached better pics of a couple of the Resource bulls and a heifer calf (full sib to first bull)

    Angus and Simmi bulls!

For the Angus bulls: Baldridge Jennings : I used a paternal brother, Baldridge Download, from Genex.  Calves came easy, are hairy, grew well, and are structurally correct. I'd maybe like to see a little more flex in the pasterns on all of them.  Bulls need more testicles and docility is so so. ...

Thanks Fish.  Yes they do grow really well to weaning and yearling then slow down.  Bull calves have averaged over 800lb 205 day weights and YW avg around 1300-1400lbs.  Nice part is they don't keep growing after that.  They seem to fill out and stay moderate in frame. They aren't really "show...

Some more pics of some of my Resource progeny for those who are interested. Bull Calf pictured at 11 months of age. Hfr Calf at 9 months, and my yearling bull.  First 2 are flushmates. Yearling bull is on the lean side - walked with 20 cows this summer.  The thing I love about them all is the...

Super disposition.  Certainly not anywhere near being our largest cows.  They would be some of our smaller cows.  They are young still but I'm thinking 1400lbs mature but only frame 5.5-6.  Low set and wide/deep type cows.

Your herdbull is doing a lot of good things for you.  Toss the ol semen tank in the corner for a year or 2 and let him do his thing  <rock>

I kind of mentioned it before. Parents are calving about 20 of them this year. They are moderate frame, easy fleshing, quiet, good feet, abundant milk (potentially too much for some environments maybe?), and good mothers.  No calving issues to report thus far.  Not what I would call "pretty"...

That first heifer, 6398, is flat good in my opinion.  Looks like a momma cow in the making.  The last heifer, 6138 is crazy deep flanked.  She's cool in her own way.  Best of luck with the lase.  Cattle look very good.

Airgator - without measuring pelvic areas (which I have never done) you'll never know for sure. I'd guess it has more to do with the bw and being finer boned but smaller, finer heifer tend towards smaller pelvic areas over the long term.  I am pretty confident in saying that the hfr you describe...

I think where you could run into trouble with Resource is when you mix in any narrow-pelvis, straight calving ease bloodlines.  Those daughters could potentially be a problem if the inherit the bone structure of the calving ease side and the bone mass of Resource.  As for us, we essentially...
