    Bad Udders

This won't happen in very many breed shows in the US simply because the pairs do not compete for Grand Champion Female. I do believe that is why you don't see all that many pairs being exhibited in the States.

Video of our current Charolais Bull. Kuddos to Brad Hood Broadcasting.

His first calves just hit the ground this spring.  Pretty excited about what we have here on the place. Will have more in a few months.  What we have a pretty darned consistent in type and frame.  The calf in the video is one of his heifers out of a first calf heifer.

    Two embryos per recipient cow?

According to my education  ;).  When an embryo splits you have Identical TWINS.  IE they are both the same sex, color, etc etc etc.  When you get calves that one is a heifer and one is a bull you have fraternal twins.  Two eggs were released and fertilized and you have two embryonic sacs.  Same...

    Horse Slaughter facilities continued

XBAR - What do you propose to do with the horses in the country that are not usable or wanted at this time?  Just curious.  Retirement homes?  Just like nursing homes for the elderly in this country, turning a horse out for retirement without someone to look after it is inviting abuse of the...

    Got to share

Tell her congrats.  Her team will get to go to Louisville or maybe Denber and compete there I believe. The third place team in Missouri FFA Livestock competes at the American Royal.

    Chronic scours

Did the calf have a good supply of Colustrum at birth?  We just lost a twin bull calf 250 lbs to complications from grey scours. An antitoxin shot will help.  However, sometimes it just doesn't seem to matter.  Our bull calf was recovering from the scours and then his gut died.  I can't find...

    Heifer Futurities

I am looking for information on how other breeds and organizations organize their heifer futurites.  I can find several futurities that are being held on a yearly basis but very little on the actual rules and regulations that are in place for those futurities.  As far as membership, nominations...

    Nursemate ASAP any experiences?

No, I don't think it is what you would keep to use on every calf born.  However, it is designed to get the calf up and going.  I believe that the B-12 is to stimulate appetite.  I am interested in using it on those calves that are born stressed due to bad weather.  it is intended to assist in...

    FSIS furlough

I agree Knabe.  I think that this is just another scare tactic being used by ALL the politician in Washington.  Scaring John Q Public has worked for the past four years and will probably continue to work.  Just wondering how long Washington and the news media can continue to cry wolf before we...

    Nursemate ASAP any experiences?

One of our commercial producers was telling me that he was having good luck using Nursemate ASAP, on his stressed newborns.  product made by Sterling Technology, Brookings SD.  It is not a replacement to colostrum rather an addition. Has anyone else used this product? and if so what are your...

    Firewater

Mark,  we are using SCR Frenchy as one of our base bulls and the above bull is a Firewater x dynasty x scr frenchy.  the SCR Frenchy bull is  I believe 3/4 french. I would have to go back and look.  However we are having a lot of success with him and have also used the Mogo u23 bull.  I believe...

    Firewater

My opinion for what little it is worth is this.  Firewater has been a very heavily used bull and definately the hottest bull for making show heifers out there right now.  Like any very popular bull, (the last charolais bull that comes to my mind is Wyoming Wind), Firewater has been used on every...

    Ethics

Yes, but it is really satisfying to raise cattle that go out and sometimes beat those that cost a whole lot of dough.  Just ask my kids how much funner it is to have raised that good heifer that went out and beat a bunch of good purchased heifers.  Sometimes it is about having good genetics and...

    Ethics

Call me naïve, I suppose that I am.  I have always believed in presenting what I am selling at its best.  However, I do not believe in misrepresenting what I am selling.  Matching mating’s between sire and dam to arrive at a better breeding piece than the previous generation is what I strive...

The worse part of the business

I was sorry when Service Pack closed its doors down the road from us.  We could take our old and cull cows straight to the packers knowing that they would not have to make a long truck ride or be recycled by a "cow trader" to try and get "one more calf out of her".

Theories on backwards and upside down and backwards calves

Here is my thoughts for what it is worth.  Three out of the last four calves that we had this fall were backwards.  Two were also upside down  :(  We are unfortunately getting pretty good at turning them and getting them out.  None of these calves were overly large,  two of the cows are great...
