    Recip cows

Technically you could put the bull in at the same time as the embryo transfer, but if you aren't going to be able to tell whether the calf is ET or natural by looking at it (i.e. it's gonna be black either way) you could wait 2 weeks to put the bull in, then preg check during the ~2 week window...

    Recip cows

Line up a preg check at about 30 days post-breeding. Put a CIDR in 7 days before preg check. Pull the CIDR when you preg check and give Lut after she checks open. That's about the quickest way to rebreed her if you don't want to risk losing an ET pregnancy.

    Possible donor cow

Update: This year's heifer calf by JDMC Big Sky... we've been very pleased with her so far, and she's outgrowing everything else on the ground. I have heard from a number of sources that the Bonanza cattle just don't quite grow, but the dam is a big cow so I think that's making up for it.

    Boar goats?

From the shows that I've watched, breeding females tend to be hairy (though not as hairy as cattle) and market wethers/does need to be slicked. I believe they were originally a desert breed, so it takes a lot of work to grow hair on them, but I have seen it done.

    FULLBLOOD MAINE UPDATE

I don't think a DNA test can "ruin" a "good" bull because if they really are genetically superior then it will come through, and if they aren't that good then it's best we know.

    Steer Rate of Gain

I won with 3.77lbs/day at my county show, total gain of 690 lbs. The steer ended up weighing 1290 at 12.5 months of age--mid July steer in an early August show

Heifer is past her due date

My calculator says this coming Saturday/Sunday as well. The only rule for calving heifers is that there are no rules.

Stayability and milk. Has there been any studies?

I've only been able to find 1 study in our university database to look at anything like what you're asking. Here's a quote from the abstract, "whereas the risk of being culled increased with increasing maternal breeding values for preweaning gain (P < 0.05)." Here's the name and authors if...

    Shorthorn plus percentage requirements

Are you in Canada or US? I don't know how Canada works, but in the US I'm almost positive the bull would be listed in the database as 50%, so the calf would register as 50%. Can you send his registration # so I can look it up for you?

Maine folks - need help selecting a bull

This is 100% true, and can bring up several concerns with breeds that allow "breeding up." However, when it comes to the show ring, it comes down to what the paper says. According to the most recent Maine Anjou upgrading chart, a "purebred/fullblood" bred to a 3/4 blood (at most yielding a 7/8...

    Hooks Beacon?

You can't really "expect" any specific birth weight based on EPDs. Basically you can expect the bull with a -3 BW to throw calves with an average BW 2lbs lower than the bull with a -1.

    JDMC Big Sky

I have seen a lot of good daughters out of him at Franks and around MN, and in my personal use (sample size <10 calves) the bull calves have been even better than the heifers. I sold a heifer sight-unseen to Michigan a couple years ago solely on the basis of her being a 135 daughter, and the...

    JDMC Big Sky

Thank you, I didn't even think to look at his individual performance data. The heifers I'd be looking to use him on were 70-78lbs by Homedale Creole 135, Homedale Discovery, and Saskvalley Outlaw.

    Using dairy cows as Recips

I have had good success in the past with f1 dairy (2 holstein and 1 jersey) x hereford cows as recips. If I were to use pure dairy, I'd go with Jerseys. They'll have the best maternal calving ease abilities, and the high components content in the milk would be beneficial.

    JDMC Big Sky

I apologize if there is already a thread on this bull, but for some reason the search bar doesn't seem to be working. Has anyone used this bull on heifers? His EPDs seem to look good enough to be heifer-safe, but I was wondering if anyone here had personal experience with using him on heifers.

this is how we hunt pigs in california

Most intense experience I've ever had was hunting feral pigs in the bush country of Australia... All we had was a cross-eyed dog of no identifiable breed, a quad, and a knife... Not the most efficient way to control a population, but it certainly got the blood running. Most efficient way I've...

    Hot Commodity/ Commotion Shorthorn bulls

I was wondering this morning, are there any good Hot Commodity sons out there that are readily available for AI? He's been used enough that you would think somebody would have one they'd be promoting by now, but I can't think of one off the top of my head.
