Well, it has happened again. We had 2 pure blood registered steers class out. My contact told me they classed out about 20 of the 30 Angus entered, leaving few to judge.

I was not there. But it is tough when 3 supposed "experts" class out a calf for, basically, being "too good to be an Angus".

I will never apologize for growing thick, big boned, extra stout Angus calves.

Any one else see this? Any comments?

Thats silly. Maybe you need to be pulling papers on these steers and sending the kids with them..maybe that will entice them. SO they left 10 steers to judge? And half of them probably are not angus.

I thought that  was the way  the Texans wanted them, I had a buyer stop and try to buy a registered bull calf for down there and they decided it was to good .  Said its a lot easier to get a crossbred in your shows british breed shows  than a purebred .

It's relieving to vent but you aren't the first and you won't be the last.  Everyone has seen it if they've paid any attention to shows.  The only comment is welcome to the club, that's part of the game of showing Angus steers in Texas.  If they didn't do it, there'd be Heat Wave steers winning the Angu...oh wait...that actually happened in Ft Worth.

I was actually talking with a breed officer tonight about how Angus and Red Angus producers would have a much larger market for their steers if there was a way to guarantee a calf would classify rather than taking the risk of feeding one and having it class out.

The Texas system is ridiculous. Why not class them by weight and leave it at that.

Find any state that has three shows of the size of Ft Worth, San Antonio, and Houston or a junior jackpot system that holds a candle to the TJLA and have them to come tell Texans how to run a steer show.

This is true.

I think the system of classifying steers in Texas is supposed to work kind of like an order buyer would classify them at the sale barn.  Seems to be working as Jeff points out.

I don't live in Texas or anything, so I might not know crap about your steer shows. (disclaimer)  I do think that the whole "classifying" deal sucks when you have a real good british or american steer, and you get moved to AOB or exotic, but it's also just the way it is. From my understanding, shows like OYE and some Texas majors used to try to do the whole papered deal- just as many crooked calves with papers out there as not, so either way it was going to suck for someone. I really do feel for those of you who have awesome Angus or Red Angus steers and get classed out, I can't imagine spending a pile on one, feeding and working them hard all year, just to get told he's not an Angus.

I can not say what it is, but there MUST be a better way to "classify" steers. I ain't a whiner. Just trying to breed good Angus cattle. We are not a typical Angus outfit that relys on "numbers". We have super thick, plenty big, fast growing, correct, good travelin' cattle that excell in the feedlot, the pasture, HEAVY weaning weights, have some size, extra BONE ( I think this is why we class out), very docile and  our heifers WIN stock shows (Champions at every major show this spring).
Jeff, you seem to have a good grasp of how the "show" works. How can an honest Angus breeder raise GREAT calves and keep them from classing out?

Stick to the heifer show or show the steers somewhere other than Texas.  Do they even have Angus classes in most states?

It sucks, I know.  Just accepting some things for what they are can lead to a much more content life.

The only help you can get would be from the breed association, DNA tracking of some sort.  How many herefords in any of the major shows are really herefords, few to none.  Done a real good job of raising crossbreds the right color, and you know, even the real hereford folks can't tell the difference on most, so who is supposed to classify?

Good one Simtal!!!

Accepting something that isn't right or isn't true is taking the easy road. Can you draw blood on your angus steers, and have them verfied as angus, and present that at the shows as "proof" of 100% angus?  The system that is in place now seems to also be a "who ya know" type of game. Yes, many things are that way in the show cattle world (many many more places than just the show ring), but if it is broke, then try fixing it. Maybe draw blood on the top three animals in the breed shows and if they do not type, they get booted for 5 years, and forfeit all their prize money.... that system kinda works on the drug issue.
I also am pretty sure a few years ago, a limmi won the limmi show and it had absolutely NO LIMMI blood in it. So whoever is typing these steers must not know much about breed type.
If that is the case, then yes, show by weight and forget all the bloodlines, and breeds. One steer show. May the best steer win.

Are there any other states besides Texas?   Is there any cattle raised any where else but Texas?

Next you will be able to paint a goat black and show it as a prospect steer. But only in Texas. ;)

Angus steers are usually shown by age, not weight

There are a bunch of seemingly good ideas posted that really show a complete lack of knowledge of the history involved and/or lack of knowledge of cattle in Texas.

First, blood typing is a common sense approach that was already done two decades ago.  Pistol Pete became quite popular for his ability to blood type Angus.  Bring back blood typing and you’ll only bring back the demand for Maine bulls that blood type Angus.

Second, if you think the cattle should all be run in the same class, you have no business trying to fix anything about Texas steer shows.  The sixteen breed format is a HUGE part of the show system here for numerous reasons and it’s not going to change because damn it, people like it.  Whether it’s point chasing for breed jackets or simply the fact that there’s not just one type of show steer, it’s a huge part of the reason the Texas jackpot system makes everything else look silly in comparison.

Yes, where you come from there’s no difference between the types of cattle raised in various parts of the state.  Here, if you try running panhandle cattle in the valley you’ll find a bunch of skeletons in your fields.  If you try running valley cattle in the panhandle, you better pray for mild winters.

Lastly, if you think nobody has done anything to try and ‘fix’ it, you simply don’t know what you are talking about.  It was just three years ago that the state held a conference on nothing but the classification system.  Claiming somebody is “taking the easy road” when you have no clue what road they’re on is just plain old ignorant.

Bottom line, you folks are coming up with solutions to problems you weren’t asked to fix for shows you aren’t even allowed to show in.  It takes a significant amount of hubris to look at the level of participation in Texas steer shows and think you know how to fix it.  Name me any state, let alone a state whose governor threatened to secede, where that kind of “help” is welcomed.

Geesh, seems your a bit defensive.  You must do well under the "looks like a ...." system.

But not everyone likes it. I have my contacts in TX and many many do not like it.
Show by breed accomplishes NOTHING if the actual breed of cattle is not represented. How can a maine steer WIN the limmi breed show and HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO limmi blood in him? THAT is your idea of a good system?  How can a 100% angus steer NOT QUALIFY for the angus show because he is "too good"?  THAT IS YOUR IDEA OF A GOOD SYSTEM.
Seems to me your "system" isn't working to seperate breeds. Seems to me, a lot of subjectivity and "who's who" could make that system a complete joke.
Maybe my ideas won't work either, but they surely would work better than "my eyeball is king" system that is now in place.

Having a conference on something doesn't mean anyone is trying to fix it. It just means a bunch of people got together and talked a lot.
Your right hevmando, there is no way to make people honest. Rules help, but will never eliminate cheating. I guess in my opinion rules should be enforced or forgotten. At least they make the cheaters work harder.... sad but true...

Cowboybecoachin:  Keep breeding your good angus steers (that will blood type) and take them north. Plenty of people will be willing to pay ya for those.
