what are some differences between judges.  this question seems to always generate the same ol, good sound functional thick, or looks who's on the halter etc.  what are some differences that are constructive?

I have seen him judge it just about every way possible. I will say this, he is one of the most consistent judges I've seen. He will also teach the kids something if it is a jr show.

Cattle will be functional,  depends on the overall quality available for him to work with,  but the one at the front will make a cow,  the one at the back will not. (clapping)

why would any judge do otherwise?

Why do you think this is a jackpot show.

Grand Champion Breed gets $2500, Buckle, Banner, & Scholarship
Reserve Champion Breed gets $1500, Buckle, Banner, & Scholarship

CJC, I'm not saying this is a jackpot show.  However, Knabe said made the comment on why would a judge pick an animal that wouldn't make a cow.  Make sense?

He did our state fair open show a couple years back.  Thought he did a great job.  He sure is fun to listen to on the mike.  More cowboy logic, less judging team oral reasons.

Why would anyone do different,  because 90 percent of the so called judges either got their cow expierence from a textbook,  from  some one who read a textbook,  or from some one who wants to think he is a cowman,  but has to keep his day job teaching (lol)

some judges i've seen are in charge of the herds at schools and have been with the herd (sometimes multiple breeds) longer than the average purebred breeder is with theirs (7 years).

also, lots of us "breeders" have day jobs to pay for the show cattle.

i'm not sure who the ideal judge would be.

I would think a trip to Kansas would be in order if you are worried how McCurry will place cattle at a show. Believe this: If there any bad one's at his place, they won't be there for long. As far as judging any breed show,I've seen classes where there would be questionale thoughts if any in class would make a good cow. Don't ever put too much "stock" in any opinions good or bad that stems from a cattle show. It's one man/woman's opinion on any given day. Years ago in the fifties and sixties we use to switch heifers from class to class for the hell of it,at smaller open shows. The results were very comical most of the time.it could be done this day and age also, probably with a lot of the same results.Never get too high when you do well,or never too low if you don't dso so well. If you have quality cattle with as few as flaws that is practical, you will do well.I have seen classes at Okla Youth Expo over a 30 year period that would 25 or more heifers or steers, that had 10 -15 head of so-called "good one's" and they could have been switched about any direction and there would be some "happy folks" and some that were pretty peeved. If you like your cattle, and you are able to market them at a profit, that means someone else thinks you do a pretty decent job,and you really don't have to "show" cattle to market them like years ago.If you enjoy showing cattle, just go and have fun,win lose or draw. Some folks will tell you what a judge likes or dislikes and you decide which one's to take or leave at home. You get to the show and low and behold you brought the wrong one, then what?

I agree. SP gets more like the old BW every day. It's sad.  :(
