The Chianina and Ildeno love has me scratching my head. I used Ildeno. Two years. Two years because I loved the calves I got out of him and had bred to him again before I found out how batpoop crazy they were. For me it wasnt management. It was genetics. Non chi calves were normal and quiet. 6 mo old Ildeno bulls could clear Scranton panels without touching. I kept two reasonable acting heifers to be cows. They calved once and as soon as I could get them in they grew wheels. Protecting a calf is one thing, jumping in the back of my truck trying to get me is another.

I am pretty confident Ildeno killed a guy at stud. I had heard from some people that had seen him as an old crippled up arthritic bull he would still try to cook your chili.

Amazing to me that Tim Ohlde, yes that Tim Ohlde, was they guy who had him. I am betting that it was Ildeno that convinced Tim that small frame and efficient beats the snot out of fast gain and crazy.

There is a very good reason why FB chis are probably more scarce than pb Dexters. I dont have to go back to kindergarten to learn to tie my shoes again. Lesson learned.

In the old spaghetti eater's defense, pre sugar ray, it was the freakishly small idenos on pb angus cows that won everything. Rompun and thorazine were pretty popular too, though. They kinda went hand in hand.

For the ox person, the most sane chis I knew were out of LOMBARD. He was big, ugly, and I assume quite strong. If you held a gun to my head and said I had to make a team of oxen, I would find some of that old stuff and breed a couple old fleckvieh cows.

I must say that you really made me laugh!

Have any of you all ever heard of a guy down in Texas named, "Walter Mize"?

Last I heard he is still breeding fullblood Chianinas.  Matter as fact I think he is the very first person to ever bring Full bloods into the States.

One of the bulls that he use to own that comes to mind right now is a bull called,"Michel Angelo" I believe was the bull's name.

Sundy, I know there are (were) some Ildeno cattle that were great dispositioned. Just none of mine. Of course i know a guy that has a pet bear that is house broken too. Doesn't mean I feel like trying to raise grizzlies.

Walter Mize. Mr Mize has wealth. I don't mean buy a new truck wealth. I mean ridiculous wealth. And none of it came from the cattle business. It is because he is so obscenely well heeled that he can afford to propigate fullbloods.

I too have seen that same link.

I understand about full blood chianina's not being very practical, however I am for preserving the breed.

I have never had any Chi influenced animals myself, however I have heard many stories about how the cross breds or half bloods can be crazier than a loon.

I remember someone telling me about a 7/8 Shorthorn Bull from about 20 years ago that had some Chi in him that was named, "Dreamboat".    Every single Shorthorn Breeder who I have ever talked to tells me that Dreamboat's progeny had terrible disposition problems, and he was also known as the "Cow Killer", due to his heavy birth weights.  I remember someone telling me that they had a bull calf that weighed 160 pounds at birth, and it was such a hard pull that the cow never bred back due to the damage that was done from the hard pull.

I've never seen a picture of "Dreamboat".  The way I understand it, he was a Tiger Stripped Animal and had kind of an orange color, and that he was quiet ugly.

Way back when I was in college  the chi's were so popular.  We had the bull KK Freeway donated to the college.  Man was that bull HUGE!  He was even on David Letterman for winning the Ohio State Fair Big Bull contest.  They said it was a site watching them stuff that bull into the freight elevator to get to the old Letterman studio.  I for one wouldn't have wanted to be in that elevator (lol).  Funniest cross with that bull....a Murray Grey!

Have any of you ever heard of a bull called, "Walco Kentucky Colonel"?

I believe he was 75 percent Chianina.

A friend of mine saw him many years ago, and tells me that he was probably the tallest bull that they have ever seen.

That is true.  I remember (back in the day) when my father went to their ranch and Kentucky Colonel was there and he stood, at the hooks,  they said either it was an unheard of 78 inches or 82 inches tall I can't remember which.  I also remember them saying he would throw calves around the 120 to 150 lb. range.  We used to have a fullblood heifer back then that stood 72 inches at the hook.  For us older folks, remember that was back when frame size was the bigger/taller the better to show.  The problem was that you couldn't eat leg................ HAHA

DDA & others - just in the next pasture I can see some Marchigianas. They are from Italy not quite as large as the Chi but they sure are friendly. I know the Marky association secretary who would be happy to answer any questions. Info can be found at http://www.marchigiana.org/

I have an Uncle who said the ol' white Chi's were dual purpose cattle. They could "look you in the eye &kick you in the @$$ at the same time".

Very true about Dreamboat and Bonanza, Chi-influenced, appendix Shorthorn Bulls who gave us problems in BW.

Yes Kentucky Colonel was 75% Chi, I know where there are several units of him in storage are at if any one would be interested in. As to the rants about the ACA the board members represent the membership, if I am not mistaken ballots are sent to all active members of the assoc.

Herefords are headed toward insignificance because of their refusal to improve their breed.  Angus breeders discretely and quitely added some help - but it doesn't show up on their papers.

I've been an "observer" for a while on Steer Planet, and greatly appreciate the exchange of information, ideas, and opinions.  I've learned a lot and been entertained a lot as well!

I certainly don't want to start a controversy, but I think it's necessary to defend the Hereford breed.  Granted I may be a bit biased, since it is the primary breed I grew up with, but I think improvements in Hereford cattle have been remarkable in the last 5-10 years.  If anyone saw the Hereford show in Denver this year, I believe they would agree.  Charlie Boyd II, who judged the show, commented it was the strongest set of cattle of any breed he has judged - which covers some pretty good ones!  Hereford sales have also been exceptionally strong, with the high selling bull of any breed at Denver being a Hereford.  The high selling female of any breed at the recent Iowa Beef Expo was also a Hereford - produced by a small, "non-famous" breeder.  On the bull side, Holden Herefords recently sold 79 bulls for a $6915 average.  Granted, some of the top bulls sold to purebred breeders, but many $5-10K bulls sold to commercial producers.  Now, with all that being said, does the breed need to continue to improve?  Absolutely!  But, I DO think the cattle have improved faster than breed image has improved.  I've owned and shown several breeds of cattle, so I certainly appreciate good cattle of any breed, any color!

Once again, thanks to you folks on Steer Planet for providing a great source of information - I've enjoyed it greatly!  I hope I haven't offended anyone - that certainly wasn't my intent - just wanted to "cheer-lead" for Herefords a bit!

By the way - one of my first show heifers as a 4-Her was an Ildeno out of an Angus cow.  She was a bit of a handfull, but mellowed with age and ended up being an excellent recip cow - rased 6 ET calves for us.  She was still sound uddered at 17, and every embryo we ever put in her "stuck!"

You can chear lead all you want for those Herefords, PLKR. I grew up showing Herefords. Never even conceptualized  attitude or structural issues then. Those were the good ole days. Back then Cooper and Holden were the breeders everyone flocked to. Glad to know Holden is still going strong.

JMo but most of the breeders that will get ballots are not fullblood breeders so it wouldnet matter how the few number of fullblood breeders would vote! Also I have seen the Marchigianas on the anabic website. ANABIC from what I am getting.. is the association for the 5 breeds of Italian cattle. Their website is ver informative and can be viewed in English.. Like I said I dont have a problem with any of my chis or chi crosses  they follow me around like a bunch of puppy dogs. I can walk out into the pasrure and put a halter on anyone of them!
