Uhhhh ohhh UK..Go SOUTH CAROLINA!!  ;D

What can I say?  I take my hat off to South Carolina.

Injury wise, we were in pretty good shape tonight.  They were banged up a little bit more than we were & we still got beat.   We had more total yards than South Carolina, we had 6 more 1st downs, but the big difference in this game was the fact that we had 4 costly turnovers (SC scored 14 points on 2 of those turnovers & we lost a scoring oppurtunity on another).  We also fumbled on a "would have been" touchdown play & because of that fumble, we had to settle for 3 points instead of 7.  South Carolina deserves credit for taking advatage of the oppurtunities that they were presented, for creating some of those oppurtunities, & for being able to make plays when they had to make plays.   Tonight they deserved the victory & we deserved the loss.

South Carolina is a very athletic team.  They wanted the victory & they were fired up to beat a top 10 team!   Norwood is a tremendous player... at least he was tonight!!  Smelley is not a great QB, but he is a better QB than Mitchell & Smelley can get the job done.   I also see why they were statistically the #1 pass defense in the USA.  They are very athletic on defense... not so great against the run, but they can put pressure on the QB & they can play pass coverage about as well as anybody in the country.  Before tonights game, they were only allowing 15.6 points per game & thye held us to 1/2 of our scoring average... their defense is tough.  Also, they have now beaten 3 SEC teams Georgia, Kentucky & Miss State.  Their only loss was to LSU & that was only by 12 points!!  IMHO, that's downright impressive!!  I expect South Carolina to move up into the top 10 when the polls come out.  They also have to be considered the favorite to win the SEC East... at least in my mind they are now the clear favorites.

RE UK... all I can say is disappointing!!  Woodson throwing an interception at the goal line, fumbling the ball to give them a 7-0 lead & the lateral that led to another TD is giving up way too many points. Rafael Little also had 2 huge fumbles.  Although SC deserves credit for a couple of those turnovers & for getting us rattled, I honestly think that we shot ourselves in the foot a few times tonight too (Rafael wasn't touched on either of his fumbles) & we just can't play sloppy football like that & expect to win!!   On a positive note... Our defense forced four 3 & outs on South Carolina, including forcing South Carolina into 3 consecutive 3 & outs to start the 2nd half.   Also, we outgained SC & had 6 more first downs than they had, but that just goes to show that stats don't mean everything... you have to make plays when you need to make plays... we had trouble making enough good plays tonight against SC's defense & that is why we lost.  Credit the Carolina defense for a big part of that, because every single time that we would start to gain momentum, they would find a way to take the wind out of our sails.  Good teams can do that & South Carolina is a good team.

With all that said, this loss was a setback, but it isn't even close to the end of the world.  Losing to a team, on the road, that will be ranked in the top 10 next week & whose only loss is to LSU is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.   I also wonder if the national spotlight hasn't gone to a few of our offensive players heads!!  One thing about it, if that was the case, this loss will take care of that problem.  We are still 5-1.   Not very many teams are still undefeated.  AS a matter of fact, EVERY SEC East team has now lost at least 1 game & only LSU is undefeated in the conference.   We only have 2 more road games the rest of the season & we play everybody else at home.  I can still see us finishing at 10-2 or 9-3 & that would be impressive for UK football!!  Actually, I'll be happy with 8 wins & a bowl victory & the hope that we can accomplish even greater things next year!!  ;)  Right now we have 10 days to heal & rest up & that will really help us.   Then we host LSU at home!!!

I'm still proud of my cats...  (clapping)  GO BIG BLUE!!

3 Key SEC games this weekend...

*Vandy plays Auburn (Will Vandy pull an upset or will they pick up their 2nd conference loss?)

*Georgia plays Tennessee (One of those SEC East teams will be sitting at 2 losses in the conference this week!   (clapping) )

*Florida plays LSU (Can Florida rebound after last weeks loss & after winning a close one over Ole Miss the week before?  Or will they also pick up their 2nd conference loss? )

TJ, I guess we've both gotten the " Old Ball Coach " wrath.  That was a big win for their program. They've now got the tie-breaker on UK and UGA. They have got a little more room for error now.

Doc, To be honest I missed the whole thing. We were at the show all day and just got home. I guess we've now been Old Ball Coached and Rocky Topped. I'll always be a Dawg and stand by my team until I'm pushing up daisies; but,  for this year, we are done as far as accomplishing anything other than a winning season. Stick a fork in us, we are done and Peach Bowl bound.

TJ, Georgia is out in the East so, go blue !

Thanks Shortdawg!  However, don't give up on your Dawgs so quickly!!

I watched the 1st half.  I missed the 2nd half because I had to leave to haul in some hay, but from what little I saw, I was in shock!!  UT looked MUCH better than they did a few weeks ago.  UT dominated... offensively & defensively.  For some reason UGA didn't look very sharp on either offense or defense... UGA is much better than they played yesterday, but UT deserves some credit because they looked like a top 10 team in that 1st half.  My wife told me that UGA looked better in the 2nd half, but at that point it was too late & UT was ahead by too many points.   Don't get your head down... bad games happen!!

Actually, I've had the feeling all along that South Carolina would somehow win the East.  My heart wanted me to believe that UK would win it, but my head kept telling me USC-E or possibly Florida.  However, if I were you, I wouldn't give up on the Bulldogs just yet because this race for the SEC East could get very, very interesting over the next several weeks.  Right now it looks like this...

South Carolina      3-1 conference  /  5-1 overall  (They still have to play Florida, Arkansas & UT... those 3 teams will give them problems, IMHO.)

Kentucky               1-1 Conference /  5-1 overall  (We still have to play LSU, Florida, UT & UGA... that's going to be brutal!!)

Tennessee            1-1 Conference / 3-2 overall   (they still have Kentucky, South Carolina, Auburn, Alabama... those will be 4 tough games for UT).

Florida                  2-2 Conference / 4-2 overall   (they still have to play Kentucky, South Carolina, UGA... they are 1 game behind & have 3 tough games ahead of them.)

Georgia                2-2 Conference / 4-2 overall  (you guys are also 1 loss behind, but you have to play Florida, Auburn & Kentucky. ).

Vandy could pull off an upset or 2, but they are most likely out of this race.

As you can see South Carolina is probably in the drivers seat, but even at this point, I think that any of those 5 teams could win this thing.  Several might tie for 1st place & several others might tie for 2nd place with Vandy ending up in the cellar.  I still think the SEC-E champ is going to be a 2 or possibly even a 3 loss team.  This race is waaay too close to call, so don't give up yet, espcially if the Dawgs can win out.

However, I know how you feel.  It makes me sick to think that we imploded in our loss to South Carolina because right now we would still be undefeated in conference play everybody except for UT, would have 2 losses.  That would've been a huge advantage.  But now we are behind the eight ball & our next 2 games wont be any eaiser since we play LSU & Florida back to back!!  But, beating up on each other seems to be the way the SEC-E is going to work out this year & I will be very suprised if any SEC team, with the lone exception being LSU, wins the rest of their games.

I knew it was just a matter of time before Zook got things rolling at IL.  He's been recruiting some nice talent to that school & even though Zook may not be the best gameday coach in America, I think that he got the shaft at Florida & IL got a steal when they hired him.  Afterall, he only recruited last years national championship team!!

IL, IMHO, is a legit top 20 team.  I do think that Wisconsin was a bit overrated, but IL played Missouri close & they have beaten some other pretty decent teams.  IL is the real deal... they should do well in the Big 10 this year & I am pulling for them!!      ;)

LSU hasn't proved me wrong yet ! They are still my pick to win it all.
TJ, I haven't or will ever give up on my DAWGS.
IMHO and no offense to those who love them but, I don't think CAL can hang with those others in the top five. Those top 10 upsets that help teams move up just wouldn't ever happen a few years ago when I thought we had a team that could've won it all. We were 13-1 and were on the outside looking in.

Shortdawg... I know that you wont ever give up on them, but I just wanted to point out that it is way too early to concede.  A lot can still happen, even though it will be uphill for both the Dawgs & the Cats.

I also don't mean to offend any of the fans of the following teams, because they are all having a VERY good season.  BUT, I also have to question Cal a little bit, but not sure who else you put at #2.  Boston College maybe?  Ohio State has a pretty decent shot at running the table in the Big 10, I just can't see them as the 3rd best teams in the country.  USF is having a really good year by beating Auburn & West Virginia & while I think that they are a solid team, I just don't buy that they are really the 5th best team in the country.

Speaking of USF, I watched part of the USF / FAU game yesterday.  USF was lucky to beat FAU & had FAU not missed 3 field goals, they wouldn't have.  The score was 28-23 with about a minute to go.  FAU failed to convert on 4th & long, leaving USF a VERY short field for an easy score.  But that game was MUCH closer than 35-23!!  BTW, we beat that same FAU team last weekend, 45-17 & it could've been much worse.  So, if USF really is the #5 team in the country, shouldn't they have pounded FAU like we did?  You would think so, but the bottom line is that they are still undefeated, they have a very nice team & they just might win the Big East.

BTW, I sure hope that LSU proves you wrong this weekend!!  ;)  ;D

Being from Oregon I am a Duck fan.  Even though they just beat us last week I don't really think Cal can stand up against a team like LSU.  If it wasn't for Colvin fumbling out of the endzone in the final minutes Cal wouldn't be #2 and Oregon might be.  I think a team that could both spread the field and pound the ball up the middle would have a better chance against the top teams.  A team like Cal with only one real weapon would be shut down offensively by LSU.  I'm not saying that Oregon would beat LSU I just think that they would have a better chance.

I also think that Oregon is a better team than Cal, despite the loss.

i've seen three of cal's games.  they are not #2.  they looked really weak against Tennessee on the run and should have lost.  they looked weak against the pass against oregon.  that said, they gamble on defense, force bad decisions, make turnovers, have good special teams and a good offense.  they will not be able to stop probably ohio state or lsu.  i do have one guarantee about cal, EVERY game will be exciting because they are fast, perhaps not like florida or usc, which have stumbled for breakdown reasons, discipline?  cal may not be remotely effective if someone takes away one facet of the offensive game like a lsu, penn state, ohio state can.  the most boring games this year is any game with notre dame.  the most exciting/intriguing player on that team is the outside linebacker 99 who is learning his position who gets burned every once in a while for not holding his block and forgets to turn the play inside.  still he's fun to watch.
