Genetic Defects in Shorthorns

Who are some of well known carriers of DS that spread it in the breed. I think they said the Improver bull was the original "St. Louis Lad" originator. Jakes Proud Jazz. Is Double Stuff ds?

JPJ and Double Stuff get their DS from Irish Pride.  JPJ has two shots and Double Stuff has one which is also where Double Stuff gets the TH.  The PHA comes from Stinger on the dams side of Double Stuff.  I have used JPJ genetics more than anyone I can think of and have had only one affected calf.  The calf grew out of the condition and weaned off his 11 year old dam at 680.  Since the genetics have been around for quite some time I have always been puzzled as to why the issue is just now surfacing?  Do you think that there my be an environment component that causes greater expression of the gene?  Also, since it is linked somehow to PHA does there need to be a carrier of that condition in the background?

It is pretty clear, from the discussion here and elsewhere,  that DS needs some additional influence to be expressed.  Certainly PHA and TH are modifiers or enhancers of DS expression.    There is information that DS was seen in a herd where the  parents were PHAF  but from PHAC ancestors.    Additionally,  there is too much testing which comes back "incomplete" and this indicates,  as I  have said before,  that a lot more work needs to be done.    At the least,  it would appear that the current DS test was released prematurely and is adversely affecting the value of some breeding lines where the phenotypic condition is never expressed.

I have a heck of a time getting a handle on DS. But as I understand it.......the worst affected matings are ones with PHA involved on top od the DS deal? So..............Does that mean that a dsc times a dsc that is also a pha carrier is the bad result mating? Or is it a dsc times a dsf but a pha carrier the disaster. I THINK YOU COULD ARGUE THAT IF IT WASN'T FOR PHA.......DS WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN DISCOVERED.......AT LEAST YET. I also wonder about DS being in other breeds......but they haven't been mated to the damn PHA deal yet. It would be kinda interesting if say the pharo cattle or say a OCC Anchor ended up being a DS carrier........because to me the kinda have the jpj look to them. Thats a stretch I know but theres gotta be more DS out there in other breeds. Whether it bled out way back in the 1970's as an accident....or came from another mutation. I also wonder if we as an industry are getting close to having a handle on most skeletally affected defects.

When I talked to the powers that are doing the research,(mind you this is my little mind summarizing data) they said that PH and DS reside on the same DNA strand. Theory is when you match up two carriers DSc and PHc the defect is more pronounced. TH is different strand and doesn't seem to effect DS carriers. When mating two DS carriers I had one limb effected and it wasn't near as severe as PHC. BTW- when we bought the PHC cow 10 yrs ago, we were told she was clean. Goes back to testing everything suspect in your herd to have a genetic map of what you are dealing with.
One popular club sires has not had all his sons tested. This is how we found out one of his sons was a DSC by unknowing using a DSC bull on a daughter of Simmi x Club bull. Once I mentioned to the folks I had a Simmi x son of this sire- first it was said, well that isn't possible. When I mentioned the grandsire on her paternal side is when they mentioned the entire AI siring offering had not been tested.
