When a steer is sold by the original breeder, many times it will be resold  3 or 4 different times before it finally ends up with the person that shows it.

Bobby is in the picture.  They told me he was out of a clean up bull,  Not an Alias.

Its getting to where you have to permanently mark your calves in case they win you can recognize them.  You shouldn't have to.

Be careful about doing that.  You don't want to piss off the trader that buys them.  And without the trader your calves probably wouldn't win....

I saw that calf many times from when he was a baby 'til he sold the first time, and he always had a unique massive yet soft look to him, just like the SA grand looks.  That, coupled with the fact that he was solid white and pink hided leads to me think that it very well could be the same steer.  I've also heard from others who'd seen him before and at SA who think the same.  I doubt it'll ever be confirmed by those who could, though...

But I guess I'm enough of a believer to say it.  Congratulations, Cody.

I can say this much, one heck of a steer, congrats if you raised him. I also would agree that he doesn't look like a shortie cross. Looks more like that Alias x Charolais

There are many breeders who brand and mark their calves with no harm to their sales.  If the traders don't like it they can go somewhere else.  They are just as likely and some probably more to lie to you and tell you your calf got the gate and that you need to price them cheaper because they aren't good enough to win even though they do.  Gassman brands his cattle on the jaw after a few of the jocks not telling him where the cattle went and changing sires and stuff like that and his sale is as good as ever.  Also Dusty the way I look at it those traders are the ones that need to be careful.  If certain ones keep up their current business practices they won't have any business to practice and the industry will probably be better off

There is a legitimate story as to why the exhibitor called it a Char-Shorthorn cross during an official "interview" but the off-the record truth behind it (as told by the one who would know) matches up it to being bred exactly as Mr. Bailey's says his calf was.  At least based on a conversation I had last night with someone who has no inkling about this conversation about the breeder.  He was just telling me about the San Antonio Grand Steer and a conversation he had about him with the final seller.

Most of the breeders I know sell their top end to the traders.  The bid offs on the big money ones are between traders.  I will agree there are some traders out there that do some shady stuff like don't pay in timely manner or at all, or buying one and not picking it up.  But the big name traders are usually pretty good about taking care of the sellers that supply them with calves or else they wouldn't be in business.  If I sell one to a trader for a whorehouse price as soon as that calf leaves my place if the trader doesn't want to tell me where the calf went or what it was called that is his choice.  I wouldn't piss off someone that spent a lot of money with me.

Regardless of how one does things or who someone sells to, honesty will get that person not only farther in business but farther in life as well. Lying to get more money or simply bending the rules to get more money will never justify itself in the long run. Not saying anything about anyone or anybody, yet i know this stuff exists and it is simply not the way things should be done period.

Was the calf really a February two-year old like the current rumor being spread says?

If it was the calf that Cody raised, I can tell you that he was not a February.  I'm positive that one was a late summer - early fall born.
