We have a 4-H project market Hereford steer born this past spring on our farm. Just brought him in the barn about a week ago from the pasture. He’s been to a fair this summer and leads fairly well. We haven’t worked with him consistently for the past few months since our fair, but will now that he’s in the barn and in a 12x12 pen. He has another steer as a companion in the barn also.
He’s been headbutting lately. Started with ramming if he got a chance and it seems to get getting worse. This isn’t scratch my head behavior, this seems mean like it’s him trying to be dominant.
What’s the best way to stop this?
We researched a bit and the advice I found is to pop him in the nose when he does it and continue to lead him consistently to assert our dominance. We’ve raised quite a few steers but haven’t had one pull this behavior yet. We definitely want to work through this issue. Thanks for any suggestions
