Help.... Fair is next week and Steer is lame this AM

Morning, My daugther's steer is lame this am.  This steer is a multi-time-champ at jackpot shows this summer.  Fair starts Sunday..... We went to bring him in the barn this morning and he is very lame on his front left leg.  We checked his hoof for foreign objects and check for any areas that are warm on his leg and shoulder.  We soaked his leg with cold water for 15 minutes.  The only thing we noticed was an area that was slightly swollen (not warm at all) just above his hoof ... He will only put weight on his leg if he has to walk.  My big concern is if it is his shoulder.

Besides "drugs" what else can we do?  We will water/ice it again this around noon and he'll have his normal all-day stall time with the fans.  Does anyone have any ideas for special wraps? ways to check his shoulder?

May be Footrot. We had a cow come up lame yesterday that started out of nowhere. Checked hoof, nothing. Had some swelling in back of the foot. I always thought footrot came from standing in water, or wet ground. Vet said it can come from stepping on a rock, or uneven ground, and bruising the heel. We gave some Sulfa Bolus per the directions for weight. Be careful though with your steer, as I believe there is a slaughter restriction.

Draxxin has a very short withdrawal if its footrot

I was thinking footrot also. Run your finger between his hooves ( if he's calm enough) and smell your finger to see if it has a very foul smell. Be careful because it t will be very tender if it is foot rot. Good luck to you.

Foot rot.....  Get them to the vet quickly to get started on antibiotics

I have luck soaking foot in Epsom salt and water for as long as possible. Put steer in chute and put hoof in feed pan or small bucket add Epsom salt mixed with water. Be sure it is mixed up. also give shot of antibiotic LA 200 works well but will leave a knot. Had 2 cows this week both walking fine the next day. Good luck

According to the link below Naxcel is labeled for foot rot and only has a 4 day withdrawal.

but the slaughter withhold for Draxxin in cattle
when used according to label (which includes footrot)
is 18 days from the last treatment - it is 5 days for swine

From the label -
RESIDUE WARNINGS
Cattle
Cattle intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 18 days from the last treatment. Do not use in female dairy cattle 20 months of age or older. A withdrawal period has not been established for this product in pre-ruminating calves. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal.
Swine
Swine intended for human consumption must not be slaughtered within 5 days from the
last treatment.

In my experience, the more effective the drug- the longer acting the ester- the longer the stated withdrawal. 


Speaking of banamine, I bet I've went through 50, 100cc bottles saving bottle calves.  I've never administered anything IV.  Never had even the slightest signs of clostridial myositis either.

Update.... we soaked his foot and treated him w asprin for 5 days..  It worked and he went to fair and was Grand Champion  . Thank you for all your help!  (clapping)

If you haven't already, get the calf to a vet and get it correctly diagnosed.  I would not recommend LA200 as it will give you a nice bulge in the next for the show....assuming your calf is well enough to show.
