Ok guys i feel like i should know this but i dont. We have a cow that we are looking at flushing. First time doing it and so this is a new venture. We have been doing natural service for last few yrs and no ai just time consuming and dont have the time. So fast forward cow we are wanting to flush calved 9/27 she hasnt cycled back yet and we are needing to push her that way cause need to get flushed a transfered pretty quick for calves to fall when we need em to. So whats the best way. We are needing to get a reference heat.

Agree.  I prefer to see a natural heat if I'm going to conventional flush.  You can always IVF her tho. That would be my recommendation.  (thumbsup)

If she were at my place a couple years ago and I wanted to do a conventional on her I would have my ET vet come check her out.  If he said she was good I would set her up with a CiDR and flush.

But now I sync them, breed them, and then IVF them after 75 days bred.  It keeps them in sync with the rest of the herd and that to me is worth it.  I do not have a dedicated donor pen and I don't have time to mess with a cow that is calving completely opposite of the rest of the herd.

If we are wanting to flush a particular cow, we give her Pg at 30 days, wait 14 days and then run the 7 day CIDR protocol on her.  Have never had a donor, not show a good heat and have a CL when under those conditions.  We typically will flush her multiple times and then leave her open to get her bred back on time.  Austin Wolf and Donor Solutions does a great job getting them set up and flushed for us.  We will sometimes do it at home, and then take them out for the retrieval, but Donor Solutions is reasonable and they take great care of them.

Bout 5 yrs back we use to time ai everything so setting on up is nothing new just flushing is new for us. I guess we are just confused on how the process will work. Ill say this i am not the one on the phone doing the talking it is my father so when the information gets to me well can be a little off. So is someone could explain how they set a donor up to flush and not to ai id loce to hear the explanation

Are we talking conventional? If so it’s just like AI, with 2x a day FSH injections, pull CIDR and give PG and watch for heat.  Breed the cow 2x 12hrs apart. Then retrieve embryos a week later.  This is a pretty abbreviated and simplified explanation.

I now understand why you want a reference heat. Most centers want a starting point, but at home I don’t require that.

With that starting point they will let you know when they want her to come in so they can start her on the FSH and such.  It also keeps down on the amount of time you need to pay them to house her.

My conventional ET guy comes to the farm, so we set them up when its conveinent for us and him.
