I have been really wondering on this... Is there a difference between club calves and the regular breed. for example. is there a true difference between an angus calf and an angus club calf? Please explain.

Angus is a breed as is Simmental, Hereford, Maine-Anjou, etc., club calf would be more of a generic term, there is no standard for what can be called a club calf and what can't.  I guess the best explanation would be that someone would label a calf a "club calf" if they believe it is of the quality to be shown....or maybe if they want someone else to believe it is of the quality to be shown.

Well an Angus Club Calf is also an Angus, sometimes, lol.  The term Club Calf first became popular to identify the composite breed cattle popular for making show steers.  Its since spread to include pretty much any calf that is show quality.

It really comes down to this: Club calves are (and anything that is called club calves) are bred to be hairy, have more bone, big butts, deep sided, and wide topped.  Now those traits can all be found in purebreds also, but the combo of all is very rare, and the emphasis as to why a angus cow is bred to be hairy in Montana is different than a club calf growing hair in NE.  Might add that some breeds are really club calves in costume really.  Maine being one, they don't like it but if it weren't for club calves maines would be even harder to come by.

Yep, more of a generic term for calves bred to be show cattle.

Well, it's obvious none of you know the definition of "Club Calf".  The term Club Calf is a 4 H term.  Many years ago in a land far far away..........................................Oh!  that's another story.

Club Calf refers to a show calf purchased by the 4-H club.  It used to be common practice for the Club to buy all the show calves, and then distribute to the members many different ways; some clubs held auctions, some donated the calves, some had a set price, and the member's names were drawn for the calves by number.  Probably lots of other ways too.  The Club leader(s) would most times buy all calves from one producer in order to have a matching group of calves.  It then came down to who did the best job feeding, grooming & fitting being the Champion.

NOW:  Club Calf is over used and abused as meaning a Show Calf, most often referring to a Steer.

Learn something everyday.  I always knew the connection with 4-H clubs, but did not know there was a time where they bought the calves.
