If I decide to breed her to a clubby bull, which one ?? UPDATED 11-12-13

Two year old Galloway heifer pictured with 2 week old heifer calf at side.  Thinking about maybe breeding her to a clubby bull.  She is about 950 lbs now.  Put together pretty decent.  Could use a little more width.  Structured just fine, little sickle hocked.

Suggestions?

BW shouldn't be an issue.  Typically Galloways have a large pelvic area for their frame size, so 100 lb BW shouldn't be a problem.

I'm thinking if she is only 950 lbs now, I would be affraid monopoly would make her calf  REALLY small.

If she has plenty of thickness id try maybe I-80 if you are worrying about birth weight

I would seriously try one and only i was told by Chris last fall to breed that one to a small/moderate female and that he will throw a real good front and topline in them and should breed larger than most clubby sires. Im breeding 3 next year to him that are half blood angus females that are 1050 mature and will only be on their second calves

I am sure that would work, but I would want the resulting calf to be an outcross.

I would seriously try one and only i was told by Chris last fall to breed that one to a small/moderate female and that he will throw a real good front and topline in them and should breed larger than most clubby sires. She should mature out in the 1100-1200 lb range, depending on her condition, frame 5.  So One and Only would still work?

I wouldn't worry about her being 950lbs now. Most of my cows are those smaller 1100-1300lb type cows and they can handle anything we throw at them. She's got a good front end, ton of hair, good leg set. If she were mine, I would probably throw a bull like Sunseeker at her. He'll put a ton of thickness in one and add a ton of bone. She's already got a ton of hair and with sun seeker I wouldn't worry about having a midget framed calf. Another bull I like on her (If you're not into THC) is Who himself, although I wouldn't doubt you could breed her to damn near any clubby and get a good calf from her.

If they cant have a Monopoly for a 2nd calf then we might have some issues. She has the size, I wouldn't be afraid of anything clubby.

Harley, I really like Walks Alone but I am afraid you will have too short of a calf heifer or bull but he adds ALOT of width to the calves. NP is not even close in my opinion to walks alone for width but will probably be too short with that heifer only being a frame score 5. I would use a clubby with more height. NP is OK, I'm just not a fan of him. It did work out for eye candy, but I bet you would have a better calf for club calf out of Heat Wave or Monopoly then to NP. I have a Heat Wave heifer that just had her 1st calf this March, looking to use Pericles from the semen I got from you at the NWSS on her for her 2nd calf. If she was taller I would say Walks Alone but with her size I would say Heat Wave 1st and Monopoly 2ND. If you think she can have a 100lb calf no problem, I'm not scared of Heat Wave. Walks Alone is my favorite bull, throws straight awesome calves just needs to be taller and that why I use him on my tall Maine cows.

Wont be the stoutest but i gaurantee it would be a cool shaggy good one. i would also go heatwave over monopoly too much angus in that cross to go onto that female looking for steers. I also wouldnt worry about birthweights if you dont feed. A lot of birthweights can be explained by genetics and fat cows. Dont feed grain the last 45 to 60 days and your calves will be noticeable smaller at birth. I agree with what was said earlier she looks like the type that can have a good one regardless what you use.

I agree with you on the birthweight deal.  We don't feed any grain to our heifers or cows, so I am not too concerned about a large calf. 

We did show her as a 7 month old calf, but haven't since, but many people like the way she is put together, and the way she milks.

I like that heifer alot, a good sign for Pericles. Think she could throw a darn good clubby calf. Is that average size for the Galloway cows or do you get some taller? With how big and tall Pericles is, would think there would be some taller cows in the group.
