He was born Sept. 4, 2001 so not really unexpected at his age, outlasted most bulls by a few years!

Bought 10 straws of jpj @$30 a few weeks ago. Also bought 10 Mav BellRinger and have a JPJ son so were set over here for calving ease.
Bought 10 each on avg birth weight bulls in Mav Charisma and Ace of Diamonds from cattle Visions also, the only guys ill do business with.

I think the infatuation with jpj is a fad. Most of his calves are unsound and too small when mated with anything remotely close to moderate.  His pedigree isn't exactly cutting edge in either the commercial or show sectors either.

So why is he the most used shorthorn bull for the past few years? I've never used him personally but obviously someone is. I'd say he is more commercially oriented when compared to any trump bred critter. Just my two cents worth.

IMO, if he's a fad, he's been a pretty long one.  I don't believe that most of his calves are unsound.  As far as size goes, what's not big enough for some is plenty big enough for others, I guess.  Easy keeping means a lot, in this part of the world anyway.  I've said all along that I didn't think he was the answer for everything, but he sure has his place.

Nooo not a fad.. JPJ is a realization that the Trumps and a multitude of shorthorn show cattle genetics do not work and breeders are looking for a "popular" way to "fix " their problems... This is why we went with Gizmo genetics 15 yrs ago and have really never left it... that is how American Muscle came about and why he and Gizmo's image will be used in my program probably for the next 20 yrs or longer.  As far as the cattle being tooo small!!!  Who says they are too small?  most people have no clue what they are looking at when they think something is too small... take a frame 6 1200# cow and compare her to a frame 4 1150# cow.....  the frame 4 cow will out perform the 6 EVERY day!  I have been beatin this drum for 15 ys and people refuse to get it!

A coming 12 year old should have quite a few daughters heavily into production, as well as granddaughters. If he's such a game changer, where are they, and what are they doing? You'd also think that more serious shorthorn breeders would be using him more if he's so great.  I do have one proud jazz cow. Kind of came by her on accident, but she's a good cow. Unusually sound and clean necked for a jpj. She is out of a big big Trump cow though, and was nowhere near big enough to show as a purebred at any level.  She is run with cows of all sorts of pedigrees, and keeps flesh about as well as most of our cows, but not superior to some trumped up stuff.

For as many calves as there are out of him, they sure don't rattle many cages in the show or sale ring, just saying.

Do you think that maybe the bottom side of that cows pedigree has anything to with her fleshing ability, it all doesnt come from the sire sorry!

Like all sires, I have seen both good and bad offpring of JPJ. I think he will be mostly remembered for his calving ease and his ability to moderate frame and " soften up" some tall narrow made females. I also think that part of his success can be attributed to proper promotion and also to proper timing. He was a mature sire when many people first heard of him and about that time, there was a real desire to find something outcross to many other popular sires being used at the time. If JPJ had ended up beng owned by many other breeders he probably would not have had the run he had... but that can be said of many other bulls as well. Many great sires in all breeds owe much of their popularity to their owners.
All in all, I think JPJ served a purpose in the breed. He may not have been everyone's cup of tea, but he did a pretty decent job. RIP JPJ!

So almost two decades of National Champion caliber cattle is the same as a sire that got hot for 4 or 5 years and never produced anything remotely similar? Right.

The point I was making with the comment on fleshing ability is that not all Trump bred cattle are poor fleshing. I actually happen to think they're better than average fleshed.  Some of the poorest doing cattle I've owned have been out of more commercially oriented bulls (Waukaru Gold Mine 2109, RB Eagle 225th come to mind). 

Over all, I dont see any need to be worried about the passing of Jake's Proud Jazz.

I would pay 50/unit for Jpj sire : JAKE'S PROUD LEADER...

I have said this before on sp  but Proud Leader daugthers are alot softer and better uddered then the jpj daughters that I have looked at on pasture.  I have also posted JPJ grand dam 5114 on here as well- todd clark photoed her at 14 yrs of age.

Jake Ohlde  the perfect story  - he bred and raised the most influential sire of the breeds history .I keep waiting for Shorthorn to do a article on this Junior Shorthorn breeder??" The  Son of a Global Icon Angus breeder has his own herd of shorthorns".... it would help the shorthorn breed image dont you think?  Just two hours from Omaha, NE .... Probably some blue roans walking around too?

They sold a blue roan a couple years ago.

The story of Jpj goes way before jake but still his dad. He was resurrected from cal poly from cattle helped placed there decades ago and retrieved when poly got out of shorthorns and goes back even further during the 70's.

Shorthorn country could do a very good story on this. I wish it was my job to interview some of these folks. They better hurry up or the stories will be gone on just how long it takes to get some of these animals and how much luck, determination and skill is involved.
