Multimin 90 @ A.I.? Or @ start of synch

I was wondering who has given a shot of Multmin @ A.I. and how were the results?  I know they recommend 30 days before the start of breeding, but if you only breed on natural heats and don't want to take an extra unneeded trip thru the chute.

Also, who gives a shot of Multimin when you insert cidr's and give a shot of GNRH to start a synch program?  I tried it this year on 2 and will know in a week if they come back in.  Just looking at some experiences.

This is our first year using it, so I can't share any direct personal experience yet, but this is how I'd imagine it works with my somewhat limited understanding of animal physiology:

It takes time for the minerals to get through their system, which is why they recommend the 30 days prior to breeding. Doing it at AI wouldn't give you any benefit on that particular breeding, but would on subsequent breedings. Idk how long it really takes for the minerals to have an impact that maybe at CIDR insertion would provide a slight benefit over not doing it, but personally I would want it done before that so I know it's having maximum impact on getting everyone's systems functioning properly.

This was our first year using Multimin.  I talked to my vet a lot about this product before we used it, and he told me it was better to be 30 or more days out on the multimin then under 30. So we brought in a couple ai groups at a time and used gave them all a shot at the same time, to save time and labor.  So cattle ranged from 30-45 days on their shot before breeding.  From my understanding it needs the 30 days to really get into the system of the animal.

Thanks for the information.  I breed all of my cattle on natural heats with patches.  I may give them a shot one when I put the patches on, but I usually just walk up to them and slap a patch on while they are eating hay. 

I do some custom breeding at the farm where some people drop them off and I setup and breed.  I tried 2 w gnrh at the start of the 5 day synch and will know next week if they took, even though my percentages are high without it.

So I did 2 groups of 2 from the same gentleman.  Both groups were the same age, same bcs, same days post calving.  The 2 that got multimin @ cidr insertion both took.  The 2 that didn't, neither took when synched.  1 caught on 2nd try and other on 3rd try.  I know its a small sample, but when i synch my larger groups next year, I will be giving a shot of multimin w cidr and gnrh. 

I will be doing 2 more in the next month for the same guy and I will be giving a shot of multimin @ cidr time also.

So I did 3 more for the same gentlemen, same bsc score, same post calving, maybe a few days shorter post calving.  I gave multi-min @ cidr insertion along w gnrh.  Bred 12 hours post standing heat w a shot of gnrh @ ai.  All 3 caught first service.  I know its a small sample,  but just wanted to share.

My vet thinks Multi-Min is the biggest scam going.  Thinks they pee it out the next day.  Advises to just get them on a good loose mineral program and keep them on it.

I used it two years and had very different results. The first year, I thought it may be a miracle drug as every recip stuck with an embryo when implanted.( 16 out of 16) The second year, I used it exactly the same way and had a very poor pregnancy rate on embryo implantation. This year, I never used it at all, and we got 10 out of 10 pregnancies from embryo implants. I also synch'd 14 yearling heifers and 12 out of the 14 stuck to the first AI breeding.

The first year I used it I also know of a herd that used it and had disasterous results. Only 2 pregnancies from 30 cows implanted. So if the science suggests it is a great way to go, it needs to get more reliable results.

I don't think it's the reason for perfect results or the reason for disaster results it's only one component of many including luck that should be taken into account in an e.t program. Our rates increased from 40% to 65% since we started using it but also coupled with learning the ropes better heat detection more natural heats ect
