Nice group.  Nothing wrong with that roan calf.  The red calf looks to have a lot of expression down his top.  If I remember correctly, the Surprise cattle had a lot of muscle shape.  The photo of the bull reminds me of the photo of Par Defender the Haumonts have used for years in their ads.  You can send the roan calf my way if you decide you don't like it.

This cow, DMH Cherry 2 arrived in Canada December 23, 2021 from CSB Shorthorns. She will be 13 in April and is bred to a bull that carries two crosses of the Maid of Promise 189 cow mentioned above.(CSB Baxter Learjet G23)
If all goes well we hope to flush her this spring to some native bulls we have had stored in our tank for years. I think Cherry 2 has a daughter in Libraian's herd!

The first is Meriwong Royal Grant, I only have two vials of this Australian bull born in 1959. His pedigree has polled animals exported from the US to Australia to develop polled shorthons there. He is the sire of Mandalong Royal Ambassador and the dam's Mandalong Super Flag and Mandalong Super Elephant. I have been going to use it in a flush for years so hopefully later this spring will see if we can get something from it. Backup sire might be Newbiggon Jumbo by Mandalong Super Elephant and out of Mandalong Roany 51st.(carries two crosses of Meriwong Royal Grant)

So it looks like you are lining up the 189 cow.

Yes, Its working out pretty good. And... that white cow has a perfect udder. I dont believe in stacking white or I would AI her to DMH Minnesota Snowflake (white)... a Leader 6th son out of a full sister to What A Surprise (white). My Lincoln Red x Native bull was out of a Max daughter. I have a nice Galloway x first calf heifer by him with a What a Surprise bull calf on her. Probably only you would appreciate this. That is snow on her neck, not white. The red with white marks calf is very Native Shorthorn in type.

What a Surprise himself is very dual purpose in phenotype, but that FA Warrior in Weston Surprise 14th is certainly thick. This calf is just as wide and flat on top as he looks and has only gotten better. That photo was the day after he was born. About the roan... as long as she gets bred Native, Ill think about it. Maybe Surge
would work. I'm all about making Shorthorns Great again.

Yes...my CSB Cherry H31 heifer a daughter of your cow by What a Surprise and bred back to him through circumstance. I'm all about linebreeding but would rather skip a generation. However, I see your cow is the product of a mother son mating so I guess we can call it tradition. Mine  a very feminine, old fashioned roan with plenty of depth and a nice head, good feet, legs etc.

And, Okotoks, Nobody asked, but I have seen a lot of different combinations of old sires on these dual purpose genetics and if you have any Ball Dee Perfect Count...it is a phenotypic elixir.

That actually was the plan, set up four cows for IVF then also do the 100K and genetice tests on the old bull. Plan to to have back up semen in case something has gone wrong in shipping and storage over the past 60 years!

No we have not. The storms with a lot of snow have been to the east and north of us. That photo of Rosabell was from last week when we got a couple of inches but it was all gone within a day. We are as dry as I ever remember it. Mostly cool windy weather.
