I know this has been asked over and over, so please forgive me, but I need some advice. I've spent a couple of weeks trying to decide on what to AI some heifers to, and I'm really stumped.

It seems like some people have had  good luck with certain bulls as easy calvers, and others have had nightmares with the same bulls. I imagine that the difference there is what type of heifers/cows get bred to that bull.

I've considered Gucci, Mercedes Benz, Daddy's Money, No Worries, Jesse James, the PB Maine bull Jose, the PB Angus bull Slider, and the Angus bull Final Answer. There's not much information on Slider or Jose, which makes me a little nervous. I'm also nervous about breeding to something that's mixed with three or four or five different breeds ( like the club calf bulls ) for the first time around. I feel like that may be too unpredictable since the heifers are already mixed  breeds as well.

So now I'm thinking of Angus bulls- The Answer, Duff Copyright, GCC Legacy 647X, WWSC Slider.

MY MAIN GOAL IS A LIVE CALF WITHOUT ANY COMPLICATIONS TO THE MOTHER.  What are your suggestions? I have not done any genetic testing on these females, I am just assuming that they  are carriers, so I need a clean bull.

This is what I have-

*Monopoly x Herf- marked like a Herf. Small framed. Decent bone size. Definitely not small boned, but not big boned either.

*Monopoly x Char- white/silver with a gray nose. Large framed. Big boned. Long bodied.

*Monopoly x Heatwave- black with a splash of white. Small framed. Very big boned. Thick.

*Man Among Boys x Maine- Black with a white mark on her nose. Medium framed. Decent bone size. Not small boned, but not big boned.

*I80 x Simmi- Black with a small white mark on her head. Medium framed. Thick. Big boned.

*Hard Drive X Maine- completely black. Large framed. Big boned. Long bodied.

*BIM X Char cross- was one year old last fall. Small framed. Smoky colored with a white face. Big boned. Kind of course in her hips and on her back legs. Really should have been a steer. She's built like one. I'm hoping that she'll raise some steers for me.

*Monopoly Money X Maine/Angus- should have had a calf this spring but she aborted. I had her AI'd to Peer Pressure, considering breeding her the same way, but would definitely consider your suggestions. She's medium framed with decent bone. She has a big middle. She always has. She looks fat regardless of if she gets fed or not.

I will go off the assumption you have had your heifers pelvic measured and scored.  I have attempted to keep numerous Monopoly heifers for cows.  They were all too small or odd shaped.  The only 1 here has a nice zipper on her side.  She pelvic checked in spring as acceptable then it didn't change. The vet said that was typical of what he's seen on Monopolys.

I have 25 replacement heifers I am breeding now with some MAB, Bismarck daughters, etc.  I'm using Daddy's Money, sexed Uno Mas, Brilliance, and Gucci.  I like the Gucci's quite a bit as cows.  I wouldn't use Jesse James with the heifers you listed.  I know some have had small calves but I know of more calves who were quite a bit bigger.  I'm using Daddy's Money on the Bismarck daughters because I've been told they can get bigger on a clubby heifer.

I considered Slider and if my tank wasn't full of other options I would have used him.

As for your MAB's I have 6 MAB daughters that have calved out of maternal mothers.  Used a low birth weight Bismarck son and didn't pull any. They are milking better than the handful of purebred angus heifers who were supposed to be good on milk.

I use my BC Lookout son.  Calves come about 65 lbs. on Walks Alone heifers out of Angus cows.  If I didn't have this bull I would A.I. them to something like Sedgwicks Outlaw 538W, (CED +18) which is another BC Lookout son that probably has better growth than my bull.  With a half clubby heifer, I want to get a live calf and see if she can milk sufficiently to stick around.  So far so good.

I'm breeding 20hfrs this year using Jose and Daddy's Money. Considered Slider but wanted to stick with Maine influence . I also didn't have much clubby breeding in my hfrs. Slider looks like good option on clubby breds

Bred our first hfr to Daddy'sMoney on a natural heat we will be setting up to synch other hfrs this week. Was an exciting night my wife's first breeding since taking the course. She did a good job IMO

Mercedes Benz is what I would use at least on some of them.  I think you will get better heifers than you will get from Angus bulls on those cows, but still have consistent calving ease in a pure bred bull.  The bull calves will not be as valuable, but they wouldn't be from an Angus bull either.

Harley when are you going to get us some pics of Moto calves out of clubby heifers?  I am intrigued but want to see some weaner aged calves with a little clip job showing what is under the shag.

you will have to wait for weaning age calves.  I posted some pics of calves out of Mojito daughters, and I-80 daughter.  Bobby Wellner had heifer calves out of Eye Candy daughters that I heard from multiple parties were "Very Good".  If you have seen the slick sheared pic of Moto Moto, you would see he is not all SHAG.  <beer>

Another option to consider would be WC No Remorse.  Really nice out cross to your heifers pedigrees and would add some maternal traits for possible replacement heifers.

Thanks for the interest in Slider.  He is a young bull but he has a proven pedigree.  He has been genomic tested and he is -1 bw epd with a 14 CED.  He is currently on lease at Nowatzke Cattle breeding heifers.  You can PM me if you have any ?s I can answer.

There is no bull like Jesse James.  I bred two totally different heifers to him and got a 75 lb. heifer calf (both) times that came naturally, quick to get up and nurse and quick to hit the feed.  One was out of a Heat Wave x Meyer cow that's 58", 1600 lb.  The other was out of a 1200 lb. PB Angus heifer standing 56".  Both were well fed and plenty fat when they gave birth.  And they will make cows.  Jesse James is by Total Solution (Who Made Who x Habanero) and out of a double bred Whiplash (i.e. double bred Meyer). (clapping)

Wade rodgers recommended SAV Brilliance on my MAB heifers.

Based on type alone, that's a cross that should work very well.  Not sure if Brilliance adds enough calving ease to make it work?
