Old bull photos

Thought some of you might enjoy seeing some pictures of bulls not too often seen, I think at least one or two of them might be different poses than you are used to.  1-Trump as a calf in Cates' 1993 sale catalog.  If we only knew!  There was another bull calf in the sale, Rockefeller was his name, that I actually liked better from the picture.  Tells you what I know.    2-Leader 21 from a mid-70s ABS stud book  3-Cunia from the 1973 Maine Anjou Herd Sire Directory  4-Mandalong Super Flag from the 1975 Select Sires Directory.  Super Flag appears in almost every Canadian pedigree I ever look up.  He was either the sire or grandsire of Manitoba Sunrise, I think, a bull mentioned as one of the all time best Canadian bulls in another thread.

Thanks for the pic of Super Flag. We've been lucky to get a few old catalogues/photos from Rick Pisaturo (Mandalong principal), but I keep meaning to go and see him and see if he's got anything else he might be willing to hand over!

I have a photo of him winning Denver someplace, I'll try to find it this weekend.  There's probably a photo of Mandalong Super Elephant somewhere, too.  He wasn't nearly as popular as Super Flag, though.

I was at the 1993 Cates sale and I remember seeing Trump there. Quite honestly, he was a nice bull calf but not anything exceptional. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, he did not sell very high and I  believe he sold to a commercial producer who lived near Cates. The story I have heard is that after Cates's saw his calves, they decided to buy him back. I often wonder how many other good breeding bulls like Trump get missed. If Cates had not seen his calves and purchased him back, he would have just been another commercial bull who did a nice job.

I have photos of most all of the original fullblood Maines from the early 70's.  Last night I dug out AI directories from ABS, Select Sires, and one other I can't think of right now.  I also have the 1973 Maine Anjou sire directory that has some unique shots plus a 70's vintage magazine that has a photo of Here's Johnny, a fullblood calf that Johnny Carson and Associates purchased for a ton of money.  I don't think I've seen him in too many pedigrees, though.  Let me know what you want to see and I can get them on as time permits.  I guarantee that after you see some of the pictures, you'll wonder why anybody used some of them.  In regards to Trump, from the footnote in the catalog, it appeared that Cates' were at least fairly high on him.  I know that every footnote touts a particular animal as a national champion, but it seemed to me that they thought he was unique and were particularly proud of his dam as the footnote says they were not willing to part with her.  It seems as if I remember seeing a picture of Trump from the National Western later on that looked pretty good.
