I don't usually do the whole steer thing but some friends had this guy for sale and the price was right so I decided to try and have some fun with him. He was born mid February and our target show will be the Canadian Hereford Junior Nationals at the beginning of August. I hope to jackpot him at least once or twice before then and he may end up at Calgary for the Stampede if he looks the part. He's already looking to be a lot better steer than I originally thought he was. I don't have a current weight on him.

1st picture is the picture that I bought him off. This is in September before he was weened.
2nd picture is after a rough clip job and one month on feed.
3rd & 4th are of him now after two months on feed.

So what do you steer guys think? I think he might have a shot if he was only competing against other Herefords but most of our shows are by weight instead of breed so I'm curious as to how he'll look beside the clubbies and crossbreds.

I really like him. I think he will be able to stand some competition. Should be a lot of fun for you. Keep us posted on how he does!

Nice steer Larissa.  You're right that he could be really competitive in a hereford breed class.  You should fare well at your National show.  The jackpots will be tough sledding.  You'll have a reasonable chance to come out of your class but the big money might be out of reach.  You never know if you don't go though!  Good steer to play with for sure.

I appreciate the comments! Training wise he's coming along nicely; you sure can't beat his attitude. We have a few jackpots around home in March so hopefully calving will be going well and the weather will be nice so I can sneak away to one or two. I'll keep you posted!

I'm not a Hereford guy at all, and by that I mean I can't stand them. But I really like this steer and he has really transformed from when you bought him. From his look I bet he is sound enough. Great buy

Thanks for the comments! We went to our first show on the weekend so I thought I'd post an update. My steer placed second against six club calves in his junior show class.  He didn't place in the open show but I am happy with how he looked and how he's coming along. He's thickened up a lot since I last pictured him so I should have taken a picture from behind. After I finished clipping him out the little girl who I was working with at the show told me "Candyman has a clubby butt. All he needs is harrier ears and he could classify as a clubby!".

Just thought I'd post some final pictures for anyone following this post. We didn't quite get it done but he was Reserve Champion Straight Bred at our junior national show.

Congrats! I think he did very well for a PB Hereford! It's  hard for a PB Hereford to compete with the Clubbier breeds IMO! I think you did a great job with him! I am a Hereford guy, so I like them anyhow.

Congrats! It's nice to follow them all the way through! I have a pb Hereford bull calf I'm considering making in to a steer. He's a march 10 catapult x about time 743 first calf hfr. He really has the show steer look IMO. He just hasn't become real masculine looking yet to remain a bull. Like to get some input. Sorry , not trying to hijack your thread Larissa.

Congrats Larissa.  Steer looked really good.

Gargan - I'd agree with your assessment.  He'd be a pretty competitive straight bred steer. Not enough masculinity (even for March) to be a very valuable breeding bull in my opinion.

I appreciate the comments! The big guy was butchered last week and our butcher (who is not afraid to speak her mind- good or bad) said that she was extremely impressed with the beef so I can't wait to see how it tastes.

Gargan I think he looks like he'd make a really nice steer- he's a showy little guy for sure! He's certainly got a stacked pedigree but I agree that I think he'd be better suited as a steer than a bull. Keep us posted.
