SH Heifer - Breeding Advice

I have a S.H. heifer that is a Double Stuff out of an Outrageous cow.  She is two years old.  I've been given two sets of advice:  breed her P.B. shorthorn (watch real careful for TH), or breed her P.B. angus and hope for what might be a good female.

I'd like more thoughts.

Shorthorn heifer breed her angus....get the first calf out alive with no troubles. Consider TC Freedom,  Northern Improvement, OCC Emblazon.  Heck, you might even get a showable steer!

I would go with GIZMO for sure. He is very easy calver and you can stay shorthorn. Very saleable calf. I wouldn't have used anything else on my heifers.

If you want to stay shorthorn we have had luck with ALM Surf on a first time double stuff heifer. The cross gave us a really nice show steer with awesome hair, good bone and pretty nice depth of body. All the calves we have had out of him stayed between 80 and 85 lbs. Also he is TH free. I've never used Jakes Proud Jazz and ALM Chiller on heifers, but they are some of the ones that I've heard about using and you might want to consider researching. Good Luck!

Search back through the old posts there are numerous posts about all the different calving ease shorthorn bulls. As a shorthorn breeder I would say please don't breed her angus.

No PHA in Double Stuff, but he is THC. Is Gizmo $100.00? Most commmercial breeders won't spend a minimum of $500.00 for semen. Possibly then look @ the Wymore bull.

Yes Double Stuff is a double positive bull.  Better use something that is totally clean to be safe.

KMS Maverick - really good calves that come easy and are vigorous

Waukaru Goldmine 2109 - really good for low birth weights and calves are built right

I saw a couple of very nice heifers from wakaru Goldmine, so we used a few units last year. Got 4 calves, one very plain, 2 good and 1 very nice. We used him on cows and there were no problems, but the calves were large. Not the kind you would want from heifers. Cows were crossbreds. Friend used him on shorties and got small calves. Good bull, but as always, be careful.

Double Stuff and many of his sons are double carriers - surprising to me how many people don't know this - got a call recently about a PHA calf (lost cow and calf) and they were surprised - an untested Double Stuff son, hmmmm - so beware the Doubles and the offspring of Doubles they could give you double trouble.

Gizmo - great and proven Shorthorn calving ease - one heifer $100 is a good investment. Wymore (Gizmo son) whould be calving ease by pedigree .....you might want to get her pelvic measured.....

  I sure wasn't saying that Gizmo is not worth $100.00, but by and large most people can't afford the $100.00 semen in a commercial setting or if they are just getting started in the purebred business. I would love to have some Gizmo daughters, but he is not an option for my budget. I don't know without asking, but most semen distributors won't sell less than 1/2 rack, therefore the $500.00. I think that Gizmo would be a great choice to flush to, if a person is looking for a flush bull.
  Elbee, I hope that you don't think that I am running Gizmo down, B/C I think that he is a great bull. I love his FS and his extension, Calving ease that will leave great cows, if I could afford him I would be using him. Please forgive me if I seem to be running him down or bashing him. JMO take it for what it's worth.  Whether Gizmo is a 100 bull or not isn't the point, I would flush with 100 semen, I wouldn't breed with it, it may take you 2 or 3 tries to get her bred that adds up pretty quickly, I think there are too many good calving ease Shorthorn bulls to spend that much and I certainly would not breed her Angus if she were mine, I would keep her Shorthorn.

Yup he is and yup I believe you can. I rarely have a heifer that doesn't breed first time AI so I have absolutely NO problem using $100 or more semen on a heifer or most of my cows - I think you can select for both fertility and cattle that stick AI - which is what I have done and it makes using more expensive semen not so much of a gamble. I have no problen using $100 semen from a bull like Gizmo and get predictable maternal traits and perfomance

Lasy fall we AI ed some our hiefers to Wymore.  By this fall I can tell you how easy calving he is.  All of our hiefers this spring are calving to our Durham Red Bull.  We are very excited about those calves.  We have only had 8 Thus far out of hiefers but the heaviest  has been 83#.  With most in the lower 70.  One older cow had a 91# calf( but last year she had a 140# AI calf so take that for what it is worth).

Muridale Buster $35 or Ar Su Lu Osage 502 $20 at cattle visions. Look into these and do some investigating. I used Buster on my hefiers but they haven't calved yet.
