My 10 yr old son would like to show a Short Horn heifer next year. I have always had Angus and we have started dabbling in cross breeds. I cant afford the best but want my moneys worth, I guess my question is what blood lines to look for, price to expect, any info would be appreciated. I will be looking for a cow-heifer calf hopefully bred back sometime this fall. Thanks

it just sort of depends on what your goals are. Do u want to jackpot or go to national shows/state fairs or both? Depending on this, you can decide weather to go clubby type shorthorn or not. I would recmoend a nonTH carrier if you are just getting started. Alot of good breeders out your way.

Thanks for the info I like easy fleshing deep sided feminine females that can kinda go either way. We are however, going to try to raise our own show calves in a year or two. We may even try to sell a few someday witch is why I am interested in bloodlines. For that matter I would not be apposed to buying a real good breeders culls that are on the way to the sale barn at a premium to get the right bloodline.

I think Sullivan is the best bet for the national deals. in that you get what you pay for-but it wont be cheap-expect to pay a min-of $35-5000. But cattle hes produced get heard from again, and if they dont produce-hell make it right.Olsen family on here-Smithers in Ill-Dale Wernicke-and Stuart Manchester are close-and will help you get the best cattle BY FAR-for the money. The sale management people in general only want your money-AND WILL NOT HELP YOU AT ALL LATER, everything you have is junk-everything they and thier clique have is gold.-I know first hand -19 years and $135000 later. Probably the best overall cow herd of all (for the money and lack of exposure )would be Raisebecks in Wisconsin. FOR CLUBBY-commercial_CALL GEORGE AHLSCHWEED,SAn Angelo Texas-HE produced (among others)AHL Double Stuff-and has a number of females for sale-some being in Nebraska. These are not just little pud cattle. Backenhus produced alot of compettitve (ANYWHERE) cattle out of groups of hiefers from AHL.Frame score wise and coming from a tuff background these cattle are as right for the times as any-breed well-and can be competitive.LAST_BUT CERTAINLY NOT LEAST_Vogel Family Shorthorns @SHOW STEERS >COM-Iowa-have really done well NATIONALLY showing They -sell really good cows every year-and have incorporated alot of the aforementioned breeders cattle-ACE OF Diamonds bred by Raisbecks, and  arguably the best overall Double Stuff -Vision females anywhere-producing calves that stand right up at national shows-etc. O0

Thanks alot for the great info.

Where in East Central IL?  We're at Hoopeston, and would love for you to come out and see the calves if you'd like. We could also show you around to some other breeders around.  PM me on here if you like.  ;D

Olson Family, I am very interested in your calves. I have seen some of your posts before, we are in Paris about 45 min south of Danville. Will you have any pairs this fall?

Fantastic! We actually showed at Paris last summer for the first time and had a great time (coming away with our first Grand Champion of the year). I'm sure we could find something in the way of pairs to sell this fall. We always have heifer and steer calves for sale as well. So far we have quite a few bull calves that are gonna be very competitive.  We plan on showing at Paris again this year, you should look us up at the fair.  Also, if you're ever up this way, let me know and I could at least show you around.

We will look forward to seeing you in July. Be prepaired to paybig entry and stall fees this year. We were going to take five head to the Clark county fair in June however they raised their fees, entry fee per class $50. stall fee per entry $ 95. that's $145. 00 per class not calf if you add two pair classes $1015.00. We may only show at the 4-h fair.

Ya I saw that Marshall really raised their prices. The folks I work for were going to take Angus heifers there, but probably not now. You should come up to the jackpot show we're having in Danville June 26th.  We're also having the East Central Shorthorn Preview in Danville on June 6th.
