I'm going to be breeding back this shorthorn cow. Her breeding is as follows sire: JB Power Express (Robinson Boxcar X JB Lily) and dam: DMS FF Cassie (CF Trump X  DB Cassie). Does anyone have any suggestions? She needs to have some thickness and depth of body added. I attached a picture of her last calf out of JPJ. This will be her third calf. I have in my tank (below), but would be open to other options.
Ace of Diamonds
JPJ
Vortec
Kaboom
Red Vision
Smooth Criminal
Wild Side
Deadwood
Ventures Pride
Salute
Radio Active

Thanks in advance,
Jordan

Out of your list of semen that you have, I like Kaboom, Red Vision, and Vortec on her.  I would also suggest Wolf Willow Major Leroy, from the pics that I've seen, he sure does add depth and thickness.  Perfect Timing has also added a ton of thickness to our calves.

Thank you Justin! I've heard some pretty good things about Perfect Timing, I might just have to give him a try.

We've had excellent luck with him so far, haven't been disappointed with any of our calves yet.  He also throws a bunch of hair.  Definitely thick calves as well.

I would use Final Solution before salute but the folks up north have used him with some success.

Any of the above would work. But, remember Kaboom is a sonny son Trump. Deadwood and Major Leroy would be more outcross.

If you do'nt mind the genetic defects and are trying to get a steer, Double Vision would stouten her up a tick.

From the looks of your heifer, she needs to add volume to her calves. Double Vision, like OH Breeder mentioned, would work well for a steer, but as you know when you're wanting one, the other comes. And if you get a heifer you want to keep out of DV she probably won't milk well enough to suit you. It's really difficult breeding Shorthorns because, there's not much consistency  for any one trait. I'm speaking of the clubbier bulls. The Robison Boxcar bull you speak of,I have fond memories of,because my brother bought him as a calf from Don. He kept him about 8 years, then kept a son out of him and a Plumbtree cow. That bull sired 4 class winners and several division champions at Jr. nationals and at major "open"shows. The Double Stuff lines,ie. Perfect Timing,X ray Vision, Major Impact, and Warhorse worked really well,as long as the cows were structurally correct.Ace of Diamonds might work also, but sometimes they are late to develope, and some folks give up on them to soon.Gizmo was used to some extent and a few good calves were born.Several of the mentioned clubby bulls might work, getting the "rib Shape" they are crying about nowadays would be the only concern, along with soundness.I probably would go with Ar Su Lu Legacy,Caslerock,K-Kim Baseline,or do as alot of clubby people I know of,and try your luck with Crimson Tide. Should know this spring about that guy,as his first calves should arrive this spring.Another bull that has had some "quiet" success is Tin Cup. Bob May has had several calves that he has bought and resold out of him, that were pretty darn good calves.,,,, Good Luck.

Check out the thread " Wolf Willow Major Leroy calves" if you want to see some pictures of Leroy offspring and his dam, as well as some information on him. I have been looking for a bull like him for a long time, and he was virtually right under my nose. He is our main herd sire now, and we could not be happier with his calves. We are getting great reports from around the world on him. Here is a portion of an email I received yesterday, from a breeder in Brazil.

" I am very excited about our first Major Leroy calf. This bull calf is very good. I will send picture. It has excellent phenotype, very thick and very gentle. After seeing him I have bought 90 units of M Leroy. I will buy much more"

Leroy will add thickness, volume and butt. His calves are the quietest I have ever worked with.

I have seen some and the ones that I have seen looked good.  I think that Stumpy posted up one from last year a while back.  A solid white one I think.

HOW DID THE JPJ CALF TURN OUT. IF YOU LIKE IT YOU MIGHT TRY HIS SON JAZZMAN. HE'S STOUTER HAIRY AND LIGHTER BIRTH WEIGHT. SEE PIC AT TKCATTLE.COM

I would avoid Final Solution. Not enough guts. We used him and that is what I got. I have Vortec as much as any. Love him but not on that cow. The calf she has looks good, go back the same way. You know I am partial to my boy Wild Side and it was free so to speak and the certs are cheap.Shoot for the steer deal. You have a market there. Avoid the breeder bulls for the time being the shorthorn heifer market is tough right now and fickle(I know big word) . You are gonna make the right choice I am sure, with what little we have talked you pretty sharp. What you breedin our  pacerheifer to? Has she calved?

Hey Jeff-
How have you been? Thank you for the advice on our cow. I actually think we might breed her back to JPJ or a son of his by the way her calf is turning out, she looks pretty good. About the Pacer cow she had a heifer calf in August out of ALM Surf that we will probably keep and she is bred back to JPJ for her second calf. How are things up your way? I hope the winter weather hasn't got you too bad. I will send you some updated pictures of the cows when it gets a little warmer.

Thanks,
Jordan
