Texas Fires

It seems like half of Texas is on fire right now.  I'm almost certain there are folks who frequent this site that have been directly affected the past few days and even weeks.  

Our pastures haven't been burned off yet, but visibility at our place on Friday and again on Sunday was literally only a couple of hundred yards at times from smoke originating from fires miles away from us.

In fires around Possum Kingdom Lake, there are documented cases of flames actually being over 100 feet tall - from a grass fire.  On Sunday, fires were traveling a mile per minute at times.

For any of you in the hay business up north, you won't be lacking for customers in our part of the world if this weather pattern doesn't change.

The rather sketchy news that we are hearing up here it sounds like it could literally get no worse for folks in Texas.  With the terrible winds we are getting up here I can only imagine how fast those fires are traveling if your winds are as strong as they have been in SW Missouri.

Our prayers are with those folks that are losing thier property to the fires.  Stay safe.

Yesterday there were fires in 252 out of the 254 counties in Texas since 12/20/10.  We are predicted to get up to 102 possibly today with single digit relative humidity, and 20-30 mph wind.  It's going to be another bad day in Texas, and Oklahoma too.  The current drought so far this spring is worse than the dust bowl years, and it has not been this dry since 1917.

Good news is there is rain in the forecast for later this week and all weekend.  Finger crossed!

Yeah, it is bad every where here in texas.  Just praying that it rains and the winds slow down.  Personally my family has lost about 7.5 sections of grass, fortunately just a couple of baby calves out of that deal.  Fires were within about 1.5 miles of the house about a week ago, just got lucky that wheat fields slowed the fire down.

It's hard to believe the difference in weather  across North America and the extremes everyone is seeing. They are predicting the worst floods in 160 years in some parts of the Canadian prairies. We are still snow covered where we are with temperatures predicted below normal until the end of the month.
I can't imagine the worry and challenges of grass fires like Texas is seeing.

Here in Oklahoma, this is usually the wet time of year. Ponds full, grass coming on, wheat that's thigh-high, yearling cattle gaining 2.5-3.0 pounds per day on graze-out wheat. Right now (especially western 2/3 of the state) The ponds for the most part are dry, new grass hasn't started growing, the wheat is about 8" tall and heading, and pretty much all the graze out cattle have been shipped/sold. W are known for our extreme weather here, but in my 39 years, I can't remember this long of a drought. The fires have been going crazy here for 2+ months. It's going to take quite some time to recooperate from this.

We lost pretty much everything on our little ranch out on PK lake. Fortunately, it didn't consist of much to begin with. Looks like rain is coming....Fingers crossed!

I am sure praying for rain. I just heard that they have evacuated the city of Palo Pinto. These fires and winds are going to make it a long hard summer on those of use raising cattle and horses. Rain forecast in the panhandle doesn't show anything until next week and it is just a slight chance. I am sure praying it fools the weatherman. Hope everyone is staying safe.

DRY DRY DRY, SHIPPED SEPT, OCT CALVES TO FEEDLOT LAST WEEK, THOSE CALVES HAVE NEVER BEEN RAINED ON, LAST RAIN AUG 23RD 2010.  TALKED TO MY BEST FREIND TODAY HE HAD A RATHER LARGE LAKE HOUSE AT PK  LAKE BURN TO THE GROUND.  OVER 100,000 ACRES HAVE BURNED IN A 3 COUNTY AREA OF THE RANCH AND OUT OF 23 VOLINTEER FIRE TRUCKS WE ARE LEFT WITH 3 RUNNING AFTER FIGHTING THE WORST FIRE SEASON IN A LONG TIME.

Been on a dozer or a blade since Friday-- wildcat fire north west to north east of San Angelo-- triangle about 30 miles each leg-- rough country you can't get to or if you did you might not get out of--  3 machines lost -  fences down from Just n of angelo to robert lee-  not a lot of loss we know of-- fire still going tonight--

My prayers for everyone affected as well.  We're in Central Texas, and we have bad drought conditions here, and most people are feeding hay again, but we are very lucky that we haven't had fires like PK.  Be careful out there everyone.  One carelessly tossed cigarette can mean disaster.

I feel for you, we went through both the 03 and 07 fires in Scale, my buddy lost his shop in the 03 fire and his house in the 07 fire. They had taken all the necessary step to prevent the fires the neighbors had not. Keep your heads up and my prayers are with you all.

We live in Palo Pinto.  Had to leave homes Tues afternoon, that will sober you up right quick.  Fire got within 5 miles of Palo Pinto then wind shifted and went west.  Got to come back home yesterday.  Misting outside now, keeping fingers crossed.
